Chamber offers scholarship

By Becky Holland

As graduation is just a few months away, seniors in high school are looking toward college. With tuition to most universities increasing yearly, students are looking for financial assistance – including scholarships.

According to Milton Wallace, Chandler Chamber of Commerce member and local businessman, the Chandler Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for its Chamber of Commerce Scholarship.

Wallace explained, “We have awarded scholarships for more than 10 years to area students, and the funds to sponsor the scholarship comes from the annual Chamber of Commerce golf tournament.”

To be eligible, students must be a senior at Brownsboro High School. He stated that the amount of scholarship is a minimum of $500, and four scholarships are given. The deadline for the application is April 15, 2017.

Wallace continued, “Scholarship applications can be picked up at the high school counselor’s office or by visiting the Chandler Chamber of Commerce website.” The application from the website cannot be completed online. Applicants should turn in the scholarships’ applications to the BHS counselor’s office or to the Chandler Chamber of Commerce. “Don’t leave the applications in the door at the chamber. The applications must be handed to a person.”

“When making the decision about the scholarship, we look at academics, school involvement, community involvement, community service and college or trade school acceptance,” he said. There should be an official transcript with present class rank and GPA, as well as three references that are not family members with at least one being a teacher.
