Early voting concluded Tuesday and now Election Day looms over area residents. To be decided this Saturday, May 10, are the races for three seats on the Chandler City Council and two positions on the Brownsboro Independent School District Board of Trustees.

Dust off the golf clubs setting in the back of the closet as it is time for the Chandler-Brownsboro Area Chamber of Commerce's sixth annual golf tournament. The tournament will be held at Echo Creek Country Club located on FM-317 in Leagueville on Saturday, June 21.

Andrew Dyer named FFA District President

Andrew Dyer, junior at Brownsboro High School, was elected FFA district president at the Sandyland District Convention on April 21 in Teague. Dyer's vice president is Glenn Devlin Derek Sims, agriculture teacher at the school, said FFA presidents are elected by a combination of popular vote, test taking and interviewing.

Letter Carrier Food Drive on tap

Area citizens can do their part to help the Chandler, Murchison and Brownsboro Post Offices fight hunger on Saturday, May 10, as the 16th annual Letter Carrier Food Drive begins. The National Association of Letter Carriers, partnered with the U.S. Postal Service, Kroger, Campbell Foods, United Way and the AFL-CIO, will begin a food drive this Saturday.

The Brownsboro Journalism Team won it all May 2 at the University Interscholastic League competition at the University of Texas in Austin. Eric Orange and Haley Smith rode home knowing the team had placed first. Eric Orange placed second in Headline Writing and fifth in Feature Writing, while Smith placed third in Feature Writing.

Cancer survivors on the first lap of the Relay for Life Friday, May 2. The all-night relay at the Brownsboro High School track lasted from 7pm to 7am. More than $15,000 was raised to help fight cancer during the event.

Weeping Mary

Few town names in East Texas attract as much curiosity as Weeping Mary, a 140-year-old black community hidden away in the deep woods of western Cherokee County. Located on County Road 2907, off Texas Highway 21, five miles west of Alto, Weeping Mary was first settled after the Civil War by freed slaves from neighboring plantations.

Lin Lindsey has been a Murchison resident for 25 years. He was born in Newton County in Texas. "I moved to Murchison because I was looking for land," Lindsey said. Currently working for the Jacobs Engineering firm in Dallas, Lindsey makes the lengthy drive every day to his workplace.

Mays trial underway

The capital murder trial for Randall Wayne Mays began Monday at the Henderson County Judicial Complex in Athens with Judge Carter Tarrance of the 392nd District court presiding. Mays is accused of the May 2007 shooting deaths of two Henderson County Sheriffs department officers, Paul Halbelt and Tony Ogburn.

Canton hit by tornado

Storm sirens blared in Brownsboro just past 9 am Friday, May 2, as a powerful storm front passed overhead. The ominous clouds culminated in a twister touchdown in Canton. Canton police officials said the tornado hit in Canton, causing damage between 8am and 9am. Ben Wheeler escaped the worst of the storm, but did see some hail.

Edom cemetery to hold special service

While our nation observes Memorial Day on May 26, the Edom Cemetery Association will observe its own Memorial Day this Saturday, May 10. Carolyn Hargrove, a steadfast volunteer for various Edom events, said the 150th anniversary last year was a huge deal.

Sales tax holiday Memorial weekend

Stamp prices to increase on Monday, May 12

Stamp prices are on the rise. The 41 cent stamp will take a one cent jump May 12 to 42 cents. To preserve the current price, the United States Postal Service will offer the Forever Stamp, a stamp good for mailing letters no matter the future costs of stamps.

Delta Kappa Gamma chapters celebrate Founders' Day

Blueberry farm set to open May 24

Echo Springs Blueberry Farm is almost ready to open its fields to the berry picking public. The farm's grand opening is June 14, but a preliminary opening is planned for May 24. Phyllis Vaseleniuck, co-owner of the farm, said May 24 is the first day the farm opens.

Mabank- Billy Barnes was arrested last Tuesday morning after apparently setting fire to 14 storage units and the onsite apartment of Mid Cities Storage in Mabank. Barnes was spotted running in and out of the burning flames before police subdued him. He was due to be evicted from the building the same day.

My Favorite Book comes to Chandler

Young Chandler Elementary School and Chandler Intermediate School students will soon have a new favorite book. It is called My Favorite Book, and it is geared toward first grade through 10-year-old children. Natalie Smith, a student support services employee at CES, said the Ambassador Company, which produces these books, sends them to various schools every year.

NJHS inducts 24 new members

The Brownsboro chapter of the National Junior Honor Society met Monday, May 5 to induct 24 new members into the society. The group met in the gym of the Brownsboro Junior High School at 7 pm. There are five large factors in determining if a student is NJHS material. They are: a high scholarship average, citizenship, leadership, service and character.

Maurica Giles to be Honored

Maurica Giles, a family and consumer sciences teacher at Brownsboro ISD, is being honored by the Family and Consumer Sciences Teachers Association of Texas (FCSTAT) for her dedicated service of 30 years in the teaching profession. In the bi-district best of three playoff series played last weekend at James G. Price Field in Coriscana the Kemp Yellow Jackets defeated the Brownsboro Bears 13-7 in game one and 4-1 in game two. Xtreme fall to Jaguars

The Texas Xtreme semi-professional football team was defeated by the Shreveport, Louisiana based Port City Jaguars Saturday night at Brownsboro High School Stadium by the score of 30-6. The Jaguars are the 2007 defending Texas United Football League (TUFL) champions, 2008 East Division Champions, and the number one seeded team in 20-team TUFLNorthern Conference.
