Bears march into Texas Stadium

Chad Wilson Photo DEFENSIVE POWER-- The Bears defense was on top of its game last Friday night in Mesquite holding the Pilot Point Bearcats to just 101 total yards of offense. Brownsboro forced three turnovers including this fumble recovered by Senior Walter Guthrie in the second quarter.
For the first time in the history of Henderson County football a team will play in Texas Stadium during the UIL High School playoffs. That team resides from one of the smallest Henderson County towns, Brownsboro.

Last Friday night in Mesquite the Bears took care of business by defeating a tradition rich Pilot Point team 28-7. With the win the Bears earned a spot in the Class 3A Region 2 quarterfinals this Friday against another school full of tradition in Celina. Game time begins at 7:30pm.

With the win over Pilot Point the Bears are in the mist of setting some tradition of their own. Never before has a team from Brownsboro advanced to the State Quarter finals, and as mentioned above never before has a Henderson County football team played at Texas Stadium.

As the final seconds ran off the clock at E.H. Hanby Stadium last Friday the Bears had amassed 328 yards of total offense while holding the Bearcats to 101 yards of offense.

Chad Wilson Photo FLYING HIGH WITH TALENT-- According to Pilot Point head coach Blake Feldt the Bears are the most talented team they have played all season. Ricco Richards displayed his talent well last Friday night averaging 7.7 yards per carry and scoring three touchdowns.
The Bears defense was outstanding against the Bearcats, holding Pilot Point to 48 first half yards and forcing 3 turnovers. Tristian Warren and Logan Bryan each had interceptions for the Bears and Walter Guthrie recovered a second quarter fumble.

Brownsboro began the game on a high note forcing the Bearcats to a three and out allowing the explosive Bear offense to take the field.

Beginning at their own 15 yard line the Bears drove 85 yards on just six plays to take the early 7-0 lead after the Tyler Smith extra point. Scoring for the Bears was Ricco Richards on a very impressive 45 yard run.

Neither team was able to score the rest of the second half as the Bears entered halftime with a 7-0 lead. Despite the low score the Bears had little problem moving the ball against the Bearcats has they totaled 175 first half yards.

OPENING TRADITION-- Each game this season Bears standout defensive performers Jonathon Johnson and Ryan Epperson meet at mid-field to kickoff the game with a suc- Chad Wilson Photo cession of hand slaps as pictured above. If the Bears continue to play lights out on defense, Johnson and Epperson may continue to meet at mid-filed for three more games.
Starting the second half the Bears left little doubt who the better team was as they scored with ease on their opening possession on a three yard run by Jonathon Johnson. After the Smith extra point the Bears led Pilot Point 14-0.

Returning to offense after another impressive stand by the defense the Bears turned the ball over on an interception setting the Bearcats up in great field position.

Beginning their seventh series of the game on the Brownsboro 33 yard line the Bearcats finally managed to score against the tough Bear defense. Point scored on a one yard run by Cooper Guthrie on fourth and goal from the one yard line. It took the Bearcats eight plays to drive 33 yards for the score.

Chad Wilson Photo PLAYMAKER-- Brownsboro's Logan Bryan intercepted his 10th pass of the season during last Friday night's game. Bryan will be counted upon heavily this week against Celina both offensively and defensively.
Brownsboro answered right back, driving the ball 61 yards on 7 plays to score on a four yard run by Richards. Setting the Bears up in scoring position was Logan Bryan. Bryan caught a Jordan Magee pass and slid past defenders for 38 yards down to the four yard line.

Bryan came up huge again for the Bears, this time on defense. Trailing 21-7 with under seven minutes remaining in the game the Bearcats tried the passing game. Bryan was ready and waiting as he intercepted his 10th pass of the season and returned the ball 32 yards to set the Bears up in great field position.

Two plays later the Bears scored their final touchdown of the game on a seven yard run up the left side of the field by Richards. Richards rushed for 162 yards on 21 carries and scored three times for the Bears.

After the game Pilot Point coach Blake Feldt told Pilotpointfootball.org the Bearcats could not match Brownsboro's talent and they also had too many mistakes.

"This showed me what I thought going into the game," Feldt said. "They are the most talented team we've played. I don't think they are as good as Celina, but they are as talented.

Friday night the Bears get the chance to prove Pilot Point wrong as they face a Celina team that has won 29 straight games. Last week Celina defeated Canton 35-6 to advance to the quarterfinals.

During the Bobcats 29 game win streak they won the Division 2 class 2A state championship last year before moving up to 3A. The move to

3A has not seemed to affect the 'Cats much as they have not allowed more that 14 points in any game this season.

Wearing orange and white the Bobcats defeated Pilot Point 51-6 earlier in the season. During that contest Celina totaled 427 yards of offense while holding Point to 106 yards. All of Point's 106 yards came through the air.

Friday night the Bears will continue to add to their own tradition by not only playing in the home of "America's Team" but also upsetting Celina and stopping their winning streak.

Celina is the only undefeated team remaining in the Bears way before they would reach the State Championship.

The winner of the Brownsboro-Celina game will be crowned Region Two champion and will play the winner of the Region One championship, Vernon (8-5) or Midland Greenwood (12-1).
