Varsity Bears claim Carl Allen Invitational title in dominate fashion

With the conclusion of football season the Varsity Bears basketball team increased from eight players to fourteen prior to last Tuesday’s game against Lindale.

Those added to the varsity roster were Logan Bryan, Ricco Richards, Jordan Magee, Walter Guthrie, Ryan Epperson and Tristian Warren.

Facing a very tough Lindale squad the Bears were defeated 79-48 in their first game this season with all available players.

Lindale used the first and third period to distance themselves from the Bears outscoring them 51-22. One advantage the Eagles had over the Bears was height. Lindale’s shortest player was six foot.

Joe Denney led the Bears in scoring with 12 points. Denney nailed 2 first period three pointers. Also scoring in double figures for the Bears

Andrew Adair (11) and Colin Thompson (10). Adair, Thompson, Andrew Pollard and Ryan Smith all nailed three’s for Brownsboro.

Following their lose to Lindale the Bears entered the Carl Allen Invitational in Sabine on Thursday.

Brownsboro defeated Sabine 81-38 to open the tournament before playing New Diana on Friday.

The Bears scored first before the Eagles rallied back to score seven unanswered points.

Using a press defense the Bears fought back to tie the game at nine heading into the second period.

Brownsboro remained in the press defense during the second period forcing several Eagle turnovers.

As a result of the press defense the Bears were able to pull away taking a 35-18 lead into the second half. Joe Denney scored 11 points in the second period.

In the second half the Bears continued to dominate the Eagles.

Brownsboro outscored New Diana 27-0 in the third period taking a 62-18 lead into the final frame. In the fourth period the Eagles managed to score their first basket of the second half with 7:24 remaining in the game.

The Bears defense continued to force Eagle turnovers and quickly rebounded the ball holding the Eagles to six fourth period points.

Denney and Seth Martin led the Bears in scoring with 16 points each. Martin scored in every period while Denney nailed 2 three pointers. Ricco Richards also scored in double figures with 11 points. Andrew Pollard and Colin Thompson each nailed a three for the victorious Bears.

Winning 74-24 over the Eagles the Bears played in the championship game on Saturday against Mabank.

Seth Martin scored 16 points for the Bears as they defeated Mabank 67-61 for the championship.

Also scoring in double figures (14) against Mabank was All-Tournament team member Joe Denney. Junior Andrew Adair brought home the Tournament MVP crown.

With the sweep of tournament teams the Bears improved their record on the season to 8-4 entering Tuesday night’s game in Edgewood.

After the Christmas holiday the Bears will take part in the Longview Tournament starting December 28. The Bears next home game is Tuesday, January 2 against Eustace.
