State Agency Employment Manager Says:
"We're Looking for Good People to Handle Very Important Jobs!"

PALESTINE - It's probably safe to say that everyone likes the idea of a career with great benefits, good pay, a secure future, and long weekends. Recruiters from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) believe they have just that kind of package and would like to tell you about it at a special hiring seminar to be held at the Palestine Workforce Center, 500 East Murchison St. at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 11, 2007.

"We offer individuals an opportunity to play an important role in the criminal justice system as a Correctional Officer," said TDCJ Employment Manager Jan Thornton. "They can enjoy employment stability while building a secure future in a career field of growing importance. "

With the additional pay raise approved by the legislature last year, a TDCJ Correctional Officer in good standing will earn $2,024.98 monthly after three months service, and $2,200.08 monthly after nine months service. After the third year of service (37-48 months) most COs are earning more than $30,000 annually. Flexible retirement program features provide retirement annuity options even for those who do not join TDCJ until their 40s, 50s and 60s.

"Shift schedules that provide `extended weekends' are in place at our Palestine area units," said Scott Williams, TDCJ's Recruiting Administrator. "The fourday on, four-day off and sixday on, and three-day off schedules are helpful for individuals who would like the benefits of a full-time income, yet still have time for other interests, education plans or family needs."

Another new benefit for TDCJ Correctional Officers is the availability of a program to help with home ownership. The program currently provides 5 percent down payment grants and 30-year fixed rate mortgages at 5.94 percent to qualified first-time home buyers, on a first-come, first-served basis.

A recruiter will be on hand to explain the current pay plan, outline the employee benefits and retirement program, explain the duties and requirements of a Correctional Officer and answer questions.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
