Chandler Elementary School chatter The Kindergarten classes are studying Arctic Weather and Animals. We have learned a lot of interesting things about penguins and are looking forward to studying about other animals that live in Antarctica and other cold places. We are also looking forward to the 100th day of school. We will celebrate being in school for 100 days on Monday, January 29th. We have been learning to count to 100 since the first day of school, and this is a very big day for kindergarten. First Graders enjoyed writing letters to Santa, making shirts, ornaments, and plates for Christmas. Thanks to all parents for helping us have a great Christmas Party. We are now busy writing New Year's Resolutions! It is very important for students to read every night to a grown-up. Please help your child with addition and subtraction problems. They should be able to skip count by 2's, 5's and 10's. Have a Happy New Year! 2nd Grade: Happy New Year and welcome back! Everyone had a great Christmas break. We want to thank Mrs. Hughes for the time and effort she gave to the second graders to make the PTO Christmas program a great success! We, at CES are very happy that she is our music teacher! We love you, Mrs. Hughes! Half of our school year is behind us and now we look forward to the remainder of the school year. We are hitting it hard in math now as we begin subtraction with regrouping. Third Grade: We are so glad that every one of our CES students are back at school, safe and sound! Our school year is just flying by and it is almost time for the third graders to take their TAKS Reading Test already! Tuesday, February 20th is the day they get to show what they know. The students and teachers have been working diligently since the beginning of the year on reading skills and strategies to help them be successful, and we hope that they will all be very successful. We will be having a TAKS Pep Rally the Friday before the big day to get the third graders "pumped up"! Third grade has also been working really hard on math! We are almost through learning all of our multiplication facts and are working really hard to become better problem solvers. The kids now can solve three-step word problems with ease and have even been writing their own original word problems for each math process. Our students and teachers are all working extremely hard preparing our children to become successful adults. As always we appreciate everything that is done for our school and our students. Every little bit counts. Also, remember that January is a perfect month to make a fresh start and begin good habits, like reading with your child on a daily basis and taking an interest in what they are doing and learning at school. You would be amazed at how much more successful they will be if you become more involved with their education! ------------- Our Character Word for the 3rd six weeks is `Fairness.' Fairness means playing by the rules, taking turns and sharing, and listening to others. Students will be recognized for perfect attendance and no tardies throughout the year. Be sure to be at school on time every day. A warning bell will ring at 7:55 and the tardy bell will ring at 8:00. Make sure you are in your class at 8:00! This month we reqard all the students who had perfect attendance for the first semester with a special breakfast. The students enjoy getting out of class and eating breakfast with Mrs. McCoy and Mrs. Smith. We are collecting Box Tops again this year. Send 10 box tops in an envelope with your child's name on it. We will draw names for prizes. Happy Birthday! Student birthdays are acknowledged in the office. Come by the office and pick up your Birthday Ribbon on your special day. Our Staff birthdays for the month of January are Mrs. McCoy, Mr. Roberson, Mrs. Myers and Mrs. Spencer. On January 26th many of the classes will celebrate the one hundredth day of school and participate in many activities in which the students have to count to 100. Students are trying to win a free ticket to Six Flags by reading for 6 hours. Reading forms are due by February 16th. Upcoming events: January 9 - PTO meeting; February 13 - PTO meeting and 1st grade program; February 14 - Valentine Parties; February 16 - TAKS Pep Rally at 1:30; February 20 - TAKS Reading test for 3rd Grade.
