Brownsboro ISD announces Energy Saver Award Winners

Brownsboro Independent School District Energy Manager Kevin McCarthy loves saving his school district money. As a matter of fact, in the last five years, the Energy Saving program has saved the school district nearly a half million dollars.

In order to save energy, McCarthy, who also serves as Brownsboro High assistant principal, came up with a plan to reward those BISD faculty and staff members who have exhibited outstanding dedication in keeping energy costs down.

McCarthy's motivation is simple. During his frequent audits of each campus when he sees faculty, staff or custodians turning off lights and computers when not in use, turning back the thermostat or closing doors when the air or heat is on, he issues Energy Saving tickets to be placed into a drawing at the end of each semester. Seven tickets are drawn, one for each campus, by the school district's official ticket drawer, BHS junior Steven Davis. Those holding a winning ticket each receive a $25 gift card.

The winners of the drawing held Wed., Jan. 24, for the first semester of the 2006-2007 school year are: BES - Shane Waters; CES - Shelia Spencer; BIS - Tanya Essary; CIS - Lisa Hargrave; BJHS - Laura Rogers; BHS Kris Williams; and Administration Lee Ann Corbitt.

BISD is part of the Energy Education, Inc. program, which is an energy management consulting organization designed to help public schools meet their funding needs through energy management and conservation. The program establishes accountability for energy consumption at every level of the district.

Energy Education, Inc. develops and implements customized energy conservation programs for public schools, enabling districts to redirect saved dollars for education opportunities and resources such as textbooks, computers, teachers' salaries, improvement of facilities, music and arts programs, sports, and science labs.

McCarthy performs a "shut-down" of the campuses during Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break, and Summer vacation saving the school district thousands.
