Surprise role reversal
Bearettes defeat Van before falling to Chapel Hill 56-51

Chad Wilson Photo WINNING SPARK-- In a low scoring game Danica Edwards was the spark the Bearettes needed to overcome Van.
To open District 14-3A the Bearettes lost a close game to Van in Van before dominating Chapel Hill in Brownsboro.

Beginning the second half of district play last Tuesday the Bearettes encountered a bit of a role reversal in a number of ways.

The obvious is that the team now matched up on opposite courts, but what was not as expected was the outcome in the latter portion of the week.

Opening the week at home against Van the Bearettes were able to avenge an early season loss by defeating the Lady Vandals 35-27.

Neither team could score in the first period as the Bearettes only point came from the free throw line, a place the Bearettes have struggled from all season.

By the end of the eight minute first period the Lady Vandals held a 3-1 lead. In the second period the Bearettes offense was sparked by Senior Danica Edwards as she scored the first field goal of the game for the Bearettes.

Brownsboro took a 13-8 lead into the half before scoring 14 points in the third period alone to lead the visiting Lady Vandals 27-15 heading into the final period.

Chad Wilson Photo TWENTY-ONE-- Brownsboro's Chelsey Chimney scored 21 points against Chapel Hill but the Lady Bulldogs still pulled out the upset win 56-51.
The Bearettes managed to keep at least a 10 point lead most of the fourth period until Van came within eight in the final 2 minutes.

Coach Griffin evened the series against his friend and former student, Toby Mitchell with a 35-27 win.

Leading the Bearettes in scoring was Bianca Mosley with 10 points. Monica Redfearn hit the only three of the game for the Bearettes.

After the win against Van the Bearettes rode high on confidence traveling to Chapel Hill on Friday. In their last match-up against the Lady Bulldogs the Bearettes won by the score of 57-44.

With a win over Chapel Hill the Bearettes would have moved into third place with a 4-3 record. A win seemed in sight as Chapel Hill had not won a district game all season.

After the first half of play things seemed to be in the Bearettes favor as Chapel Hill could not buy a bucket.

Entering the second half trailing 22-16 the Lady Bulldogs began to heat up. Chapel Hill's Jasmine Gardner led the charge as she nailed nearly every shot she threw up in the second half.

Chapel Hill outscored the Bearettes 22-11 in the third period to take a surprising 38-33 lead into the fourth period.

In the fourth period the teams traded scores before the Bearettes managed to climb within three points with 1:30 left to play.

Three points is as close as the Bearettes would get in their comeback attempt as the Lady Bulldogs wasted time off the clock before nailing back to back free throws.

Chapel Hill's Gardner sank six 3-pointers in route to scoring 33 points in the game to lead the Lady `dogs to their first district win of the season.

Brownsboro was led in scoring by Chelsey Chimney with 21 points. Bianca Mosley also scored in double figures with 16 points. Naomi Scott, Monica Redfearn and Malleri McGee each hit a three pointer for the Bearettes.

A key factor in the Bearettes loss to Chapel Hill was their poor free throw shooting. Brownsboro was 10-30 from the free throw line. In each of their losses this season the Bears shot less than 50% from the line.

With three district games to play as of Monday the Bearettes are tied for third place with Bullard with a record of 3-4. Brownsboro beat Bullard in their first meeting to own the tie breaker for third place.

Athens leads the district race with a perfect 7-0 record while Canton holds second place with a record of 5-2. Brownsboro (11-14) hosts Bullard on Friday at 6:00pm before playing in Athens on Tuesday.

This Friday will be parents night as it is the Bearettes final home game of the season.
