BHS UIL Academic Team compete at Lindale & REL

Members of the Brownsboro High School UIL Academic Team have been burning the midnight oil lately competing in area tournaments.

On Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26 and 27, twenty-one students traveled to Lindale High School to compete in a variety of academic contests. Those results are:

Ready Writing: In District - Mikey Grace placed 1st; Haley Smith, 5th; and Eric Orange, 7th.

Spelling: In District - Janelle Benton, 6th; and Mikey Grace and Michael Perry tied for 7th.

Computer Science: In District - Logan McCullough, 1st; Muhammed Bilal, 2nd.

Number Sense: At the Tournament - Zach Shaffer placed 2nd and received a silver medal. In District - Zach Shaffer, 1st; Blake Richardson, 3rd; Jachym Metlicka, 5th.

Mathematics: In District - Zach Shaffer, 1st; Blake Richardson, 3rd; Jachym Metlicka, 5th. The Mathematics team placed 1st in the District.

Calculators: In District - Blake Richardson, 4th; Julie Travis, 5th; Marla Pollard, 7th; Carlos Robles, 10th. The Calculator team placed 2nd in District.

Science: At the Tournament - Jachym Metlicka, 4th overall; Juan Macias received the top score award in Biology both at the tournament and in the District. In District - Jachym Metlicka, 1st; Zach Shaffer, 2nd; Juan Macias, 3rd; Muhammed Bilal, 4th. Jachym Metlicka received the top score award both in Chemistry and Physics, and placed 1st in the overall Science category. Zach Shaffer received runner-up for top Biology score. Ethan Newell received runner-up for top Physics award. The Science Team placed 1st in the District. Other members of the Science team included Janelle Benton.

Current Events: In District - Juan Macias, 5th place.

Newswriting: Haley Smith placed 4th in the Tournament, and 1st in the District.

Feature Writing: At the Tournament - Haley Smith, 4th; Eric Orange, 6th. In District - Haley Smith, 2nd; Eric Orange, 3rd.

Editorial Writing: At the Tournament - Eric Orange, 4th; Haley Smith, 5th. In District - Eric Orange, 1st; Haley Smith, 2nd.

Headline Writing: At the Tournament - Emily Williams, 2nd; Eric Orange, 6th. In District - Emily Williams, 1st; Eric Orange, 2nd.

Other members of the Journalism Team included Carter Maddox and Kallie Murphy. The Journalism Team placed 2nd at the Tournament and 1st in the District.

Brownsboro placed 2nd overall in the District.

The following weekend, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 2 and 3, sixteen UIL Academic Team members placed well in competition at Robert E. Lee High School.

Ready Writing: At the Tournament - Eric Orange, 5th; Haley Smith, 8th. In District - Eric Orange, 1st; Haley Smith, 3rd.

Computer Science: In District - Logan McCullough, 6th; Muhammed Bilal, 7th.

Number Sense: At the Tournament categories were divided into school size and class: Seniors - Zach Shaffer, 2nd. Juniors - James Peters, 4th; Sophomores - Jarrett McDowell, 2nd; Muhammed Bilal, 4th; Logan McCullough, 6th.

Calculators: Tournament and District results for the Senior category were - Blake Richardson, 1st; Katy Ereman, 3rd. Other members of the Calculator Team include Carlos Robles and Tessa Vickers.

Mathematics: At the Tournament - Seniors-Zach Shaffer, 2nd; Blake Richardson, 4th; Katy Ereman, 5th; Jachym Metlicka, 6th. Juniors-James Peters, 4th. In District - Seniors Zach Shaffer, 1st; Blake Richardson, 2nd; Katy Ereman, 3rd; Jachym Metlicka, 4th. Juniors-James Peters, 1st. Other members of the Math Team include Nathaniel Kuhns.

Science: At the Tournament - Jachym Metlicka, 1st; Juan Macias, 5th. In District - Jachym Metlicka, 1st, Juan Macias, 2nd. Other members of the Science Team include Muhammed Bilal, Logan McCullough, Ethan Newell, James Peters and Nathaniel Kuhns.

The UIL Academic Team will be attending the Canton UIL practice tournament Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16 and 17.
