Controlling their own playoff hopes the Bears opened District 14-3A play last week with a record of 5- 3 desiring to improve their playoff chances.
Playing in Athens on Tuesday night the Bears did improve their chance at a playoff berth by defeating the Hornets for the second time this season.
Both teams played well defensively in the low scoring contest. Athens got on the board first before Colin Thompson nailed a three for the Bears for an early lead.
Brownsboro took control of the game after Thompson's three, scoring 7 unanswered points forcing the Hornets to burn a timeout.
After the time out the Hornets went on a run of their own scoring five answered points to tie the game. With just :25 left in the first period Jordan Magee broke the tie with a three pointer to conclude the period.
The Bears controlled the second period to take a 20- 15 lead into the half. Both teams scored 11 points in the third period to set up an interesting fourth and final period.

Leading by five entering the final eight minutes of play the Bears continued on a 12-0 run to take a 36-26 lead with 5:17 to play.
Down but not out the Hornets answered right back with an 8-0 run to cut the Bears lead to 40-38 with 2:27 left in the game.
Thompson nailed two free throws for the Bears to increase the lead to four before the Bears began to eat away at the clock.
Brownsboro drained about a minute off the clock before Andrew Adair was fouled with 1:02 to play. Nailing his second free throw Adair gave the Bears a 5 point lead before Athens went to the free throw line.
Keaton Parsell picked up his fifth foul with :51 left in the game on a basket by Athens ' Odrick Ray. Ray nailed the free throw to cut the Bears lead to 43-41.
From there the game became a game of fouls and the Bears' Thompson made 3 of 6 free throws to hold the win for the Bears.
Thompson led the Bears in scoring with 21 points nailing 3 three pointers and connecting on 10 of 15 free throws. Ricco Richards and Jordan Magee also hit three's for the Bears.
Following their win in Athens the Bears crossed the Kickapoo to play the Van Vandals.
Van controlled the game from the outset holding a slim first half lead before dominating the third period.
Down by 20, 41-21, entering the fourth period the Bears rallied back to scare the Vandals. Brownsboro went on a 12-3 run to begin the final period and clawed to within 10 points of the Vandals.
After the 12-3 run Van called a time out, regrouped, and added to their lead following the break.
Despite a 14 point fourth period effort by Ricco Richards the Bears could not overcome the Vandals. Richards nailed 3 fourth period three pointers and led the team in scoring with 19 points.
With the loss and a Bullard win over Athens in overtime the game Tuesday night against Chapel Hill in Brownsboro was huge. Due to deadline restraints results from the Chapel Hill game will be in next week's Statesman.
As of Monday, Brownsboro and Bullard were tied for third place with 5-4 district records. Van was in second with a record of 6-3 while Chapel Hill was in first with a perfect 9-0 record.
If Brownsboro beats Chapel Hill they should earn a playoff spot. Bullard played Van on Tuesday.
No matter the result of Tuesday's games the Bears will not finish district play with a losing record this season.
In head coach Jeff Hutchins' first season the Bears have improved dramatically and should be a playoff contender for years to come.
