Eagles, Indians upend Bears
Brownsboro falls in final two games of GS-Canton Tourney

After back-to-back, come-from-behind wins the Bears luck ran out as they faced the host team Grand Saline on Friday evening.

In the third and final pool game the Bears rode in with a lot of confidence after just overcoming a 9 point Wildcat lead to defeat Rains 13-12.

Brownsboro was not able to take advantage of a Ryan Smith lead off walk in the first inning while the Indians were ready to step up to the plate.

Grand Saline opened the game with their first five batters reaching base before scoring 4 runs in the first inning.

The Indians added one more run in the bottom of the second to increase their lead to 5-0.

After a hitless first three innings of play the Bears bats began to come alive in the fourth inning as Ryan Epperson got things started off with a double to left-center field. Brad McDonald drove in Daniel Suggs, pinch runner for Epperson, two outs later for the Bears first run of the game.

Following a Jeremy Monroe walk, Dustin Edgar singled to center field to drive in McDonald and cut the Indians lead to 5-2

On the mound Clayton Boyd began to heat up as the game progressed, shutting down the Indian offense in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings.

In the top of the fifth the Bears bats continued to stay hot as they managed to score 2 more runs. Logan Bryan just missed a homerun to center resulting in a double before coming into score on a throwing error. McDonald picked up another RBI as he singled to right field to bring the Bears within one, 4-5.

After facing just three Brownsboro batters in the top of the sixth inning the Indians managed to put together a little offense in the bottom of the inning, scoring one run.

Needing a little more of their previous come-from-behind magic the Bears trailed by two with 3 outs to play. Brownsboro could not get but one man on base in the seventh inning to fall for the first time in the Grand Saline- Canton Tournament by the score of 4-6.

Boyd pitched a strong game after overcoming some early woes. Take away a rough first inning and Boyd allowed just 2 runs while fanning five batters.

In what would be their final game of the tournament the Bears faced District 14-3A opponent Canton for third place on Saturday afternoon.

With a depleted pitching staff the Bears knew things were going to be tough and things got even tougher as Canton pitched their ace, Josh Wilson.

Canton scored five runs in the first inning batting their entire starting nine. Brownsboro could not drive across a run in the first as all the balls hit were directly at Canton fielders. Logan Bryan did manage a first inning single and stole a base.

Canton scored one run in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh inning while holding the Bears scoreless to win 9-0.

Brownsboro totaled just three hits in the game.

With the loss to Canton the Bears finished the tournament in fourth place with a tournament record of 2-2. The Bears overall record on the season is 5-4.

The Bears will play in the Malakoff Tournament this weekend with the first game being Thursday morning at 9:00am against Crossroads in Malakoff. Brownsboro will then play on Friday against Arp and Eustace. Arp should be a different team this go-around as they will return several players from the basketball team.

Prior to district play beginning on Tuesday, March 20 in Van the Bears will host Eustace on Tuesday, March 13 in Brownsboro and play in Sabine on Friday, March 16.
