Playoff hopes still alive
Bearettes fall to Athens and Van, but not out of playoff hunt

District 14-3A softball competition is one of the toughest around as five out of six teams have a shot at just three playoff seeds.

Van and Athens still hold down the top two spots in District play while Bullard, Canton and Brownsboro all have a shot at the number three seed.

In order for the Bearettes (9-10, 2-5) to assure themselves a playoff spot they will need to win all three of their final games this season.

Tuesday night the Bearettes traveled to Chapel Hill and will wrap up the regular season next week with Canton and Bullard at home.

If the Bearettes fall in one of the final three games they will have to watch the results from the other games for their hopes of a playoff seed.

Last Tuesday night the Bearettes fell to Athens 9-3 in Brownsboro.

Athens scored first in the top of the second inning striking for 5 runs. Brownsboro's first run came in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 6-1.

Morgan McGill was 1-3 with an RBI and 2 stolen bases. Lacy Wilkerson also had an RBI for Brownsboro.

On Friday the Bearettes hosted Van and were shut out by the score of 12-0.

McGill accounted for both Bearette hits batting 2-2 with a double and a walk. On the season McGill is batting .354 with 17 hits. Randi Smith leads the Bearettes in hits with 22 and average with .423.

Other Bearettes batting above .300 on the season are Edwards (.371) Wilkerson (.333) and Lindsey Wood (.333). Edwards and Krystin Groothuis are tied for third on the team in hits with 13 each.
