BHS band takes 9th Sweepstakes Award

The Brownsboro High school band participated in the annual University Interscholastic League Concert and Sight-reading Contest at Troup High School, Thursday, April 5, and came home with the coveted Sweepstakes Award.

According to BHS Band Director Jeff Russell, this is the ninth consecutive year the Brownsboro band has received the Sweepstakes trophy. For a band to earn "Sweepstakes," it must receive an overall first division rating in both the U.I.L. Marching Contest, held in October and the Concert and Sight-reading contest held in April.

This year, the band's concert program included, "The Slavic Woman's Farewell" by Visilage Agapkin, "Salvation is Created" by Tschesnokoff, and "Tempered Steel" by Charles Young. 3-A high schools are required to play one selection from the U.I.L. 3A contest list along with a 2A selection and a march. The Brownsboro High School varsity band's selections were chosen from the 4A and 5A areas of the U.I.L. contest list, two levels higher than they are required to play from. The non-varsity band performed music from the normal varsity band U.I.L. list.

The concert and sight-reading contest consists of two parts. During the concert section, area bands play three selections to a three-judge panel. In the sight-reading portion of the contest the students have a limited time to study a piece that they have never seen before, not being allowed to practice it, and then are required to perform that piece for a different threejudge panel.

Some of the comments from the judges were: "Good ensemble sound and lots of nice mature sounds throughout this group!...it was a pleasure to hear you perform today because you are doing so many things as a band!," Good style and spirit! Very powerful and musical, beautifully done...this is a great band!," "Beautiful, Bravo, Bravo! A truly outstanding performance band - you are what music education in our state is all about - congrats - I enjoyed your selections."

This year's U.I.L. judges for the concert portion of the contest were Gerald Fagan, Greg Rose, and George Strickland. The sight-reading judges were Carl Idlebird, Mark Melton and Gary Monroe.
