Running to victory
With the game tied at two in the top of the seventh the Bears appeared ready to take the lead in the final inning of regulation. Brownsboro loaded the bases on two walks and a single by Collin Wilson with just one out. With the team leader in hits at the plate, Clayton Boyd, the Bears seemed to be in perfect position to win the game. However things did not go the way the Bears had planned as they were caught in a run down for the second out of the inning before Boyd popped out to right field. Keaton Parsell made quick work of the Bulldogs in the bottom half of the seventh keeping the Bears chances alive. In the top of the eighth inning Parsell helped his own cause by doubling to right on a 1-1 pitch. Cameron Warren came in to run for Parsell. Warren also ran for Parsell in the first and sixth innings stealing second each time. With speed on second Seth Martin drove Warren to third on an infield error by the shortstop. Martin would be picked off moments later for the first out of the inning. Trying to score Warren with a bunt, Daniel Suggs was called out after his bunt attempt rolled foul with two strikes. Down to their last out of the inning the Bears needed a big at bat from freshman Ryan Smith. Smith was in his first game back after suffering an ankle injury prior to district play. Smith drew a walk after falling behind in the count with one ball and two strikes. With runners on the corners the Bears attempted a double steal. Smith darted from first drawing the throw while Warren headed for the plate. The throw to second was cut off and redirected to the plate. Warren, just a freshman, knocked the ball loose from Chapel Hill catcher Sam Ivey to give the Bears a 3-2 lead. Warren's steal of home was his third stolen base of the game, and proved to be the winning run as Keaton Parsell shut down the Bulldogs in the bottom half of the inning. Warren scored two runs in the three run game. Parsell picked up the win, his second in district play, while striking out 11 batters. Keaton was 3-4 from the plate with a double. Ryan Epperson was 1-1 with a RBI double and three walks. In Epperson's final two at bats he was intentionally walked. With the win the Bears kept their playoff hopes alive, improving to 2-5 in District 14- 3A play. Chapel Hill fell to 5-2 and are tied with Athens prior to Monday's games. Van is third in district with a record of 4-3, Canton is 3-4 while Bullard and the Bears are 2-5.
