West Lake Baptist News Virginia Tech: What Does Atheism Offer in the Face of Tragedy?" was the title of Sunday morning's message by Pastor Eric, exploring the reality of what atheism/secularism falsely offers as an answer to life. Starting from the Christian explanation of the reality of evil, the astonishing historical record of mass murders under atheistic/communistic regimes was explored (China, Cambodia, Soviet Union, etc.), as was the cheapened value of life promoted by this philosophy (resulting in euthanasia, abortion, infanticide, etc.). A thoughtful review was made regarding the development of the scientific method and the significant advances in science that were originated by those with a Christian worldview. The pastor read from a list of over 100 noted scientific discoveries made by noted scientists who were Christians. Contrary to popular thought, the springboard of modern science did not originate in Greece (due to a dualistic worldview) nor in China or India (due to a cyclical worldview), nor from Islamic cultures (due to a fatalistic worldview) -- but began by those adhering to a Christian worldview such as Kepler, Galileo, Newton, Louis Pasteur. The pastor addressed the recent efforts by popular athiestic authors, Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris ("The End of Faith"; "Letter to a Christian Nation") who profess an aggressive strategy to spread athiesm through the current cultural fabric. Ultimately, in the aftermath of the Virginia Tech tragedy, though students instinctively and publicly prayed, and by request, clergy encompassed the campus to provide comfort -- the crusaders of atheism were notably absent. None of the atheistic protest groups who aggressively take legal actions against public schools regarding prayer were there to offer hope, comfort, or answers in the face of this horrific tragedy. Clearly, atheism offers no hope ... provides no answers ... has no historical record of charity or goodwill. But Christians were there -- because Christ is hope, Christ is the answer, and He is the ultimate expression of goodwill through His graceful offer of salvation.
