Edom Cemetery to mark susquicentennial

Settlers looking for a fresh start, a better life, began to fill the East Texas piney woods over a hundred and fifty years ago. Such was the case when William Featherston brought his family to the fledgling community of Edom, Texas. Falling fatally ill, he was laid to rest near a grove of towering oak trees where his family had camped. This laid the foundation for the Edom Cemetery. The cemetery is the third oldest in Van Zandt County and has had over 2,000 burials to date.

On Saturday, May 12, 2007 at 11:00 a.m., this historic cemetery will mark its 150th anniversary. To commemorate this milestone, the program will include a color guard of Sea Cadets under direction of the Tyler Naval Reserve, a musical tribute by a select choral group from Brownsboro High School, keynote speech by native James Golden, and a rendition of Taps by bugler Allen Cox.

The event is open to the public, but the Edom Cemetery Board extends a special invitation to those with friends or family ties to Edom and the cemetery. For further details, please contact board president Kerry Hargrove at 903-852-3990.
