Xtreme advance in playoffs

The Texas Xtreme semiprofessional football team defeated the host Greenville Oilers Saturday night in the first round of the Texas United Football League playoffs by a score of 8-0.

Despite missing 7 starters as well as their kicker, Xtreme owners and coaches Gary Craig and Larry Anding were pleased with the win. Coach Craig was pleased with the overall performance of the defense although the unit gave up 130 yards on 5 plays.

The Oilers completed 4-11 passes for 71 yards and gained 70 rushing yards on 19 carries for a game total of 141 yards and 5 first downs.

Defensive standouts were Jason Anding with 1 blocked punt and 1 forced fumble; Dontay Richardson, 2 interceptions; Marvin Hopkins, 1 interception; Chris Jacinto, 1 interception; Kailan Vinson 1 interception; Billy Small, 1 sack; and Lontario Osborn, 1 sack.

Other defensive contributors were Kerry Yarbrough, Montez Wade, Allen Beasley, and Allen Stallings playing his first game in 1-1/2 seasons.

Coach Anding was pleased with the offensive performance with the exception of 5 interceptions with 4 of those coming inside the 20-yard line.

For the second consecutive game, runningback Brandon Thompson and cornerback Clint Condo split the quarterbacking duties.

The Xtreme offense logged 16 first downs, completed 9- 26 passes for 171 yards, and gained 158 rushing yards on 25 carries for a total of 329 yards. Brandon Thompson completed a 2-yard pass to Larry Scott for the game's only score and Thompson rushed for the 2-point conversion. Thompson also added 82 rushing yards on 9 carries. Larry Scott caught 3 passes for 71 yards and also stepped in at punter and averaged 42 yards on 4 punts. Marvin Hopkins gained 66 yards on 4 catches and Eric Wren chipped in 47 rushing yards on 9 carries.

Other offensive standouts were Eric Williams, Jerry Martin, Billy Bigger, Marvin Lyons, and James Melton.

The Oilers completed the season with an 8-3 record, and the Xtreme pushed their record to 10-2. The Xtreme will travel to Ft. Worth next Saturday to take on the 10-1 Ft. Worth Avengers.
