Lake Palestine U.M.C. This past weekend we celebrated Pentecost Sunday and the fact that we are welcoming back our minister, Rev. Richard Prather, and his wife, Rebecca, for another year of service on the lake. Pentecost signaled the coming of the Holy Spirit to the early Christians, and it did seem that way on Sunday morning as the skies outside darkened and lightning and thunder seemed to be crashing all around. It was truly an awesome display of nature although some of the members who are a part of the volunteer fire department had to be called out to help someone in the middle of the service. We were sorry to hear that Argyll Hicks had to be readmitted to the hospital. We will pray for him and Diana as she seeks to care for him. Dorothy Botts had a good report after her surgery this week. She is home resting now, but we hope to see her back in church soon. The flowers in the sanctuary this week were in her honor. Lee Arthur and Barb Cade had an enjoyable time attending the baby shower for Melody Martin on Saturday. Also, after that, Barb Cade went on to attend Don and Martha Copeland's fiftieth wedding anniversary celebration at their new home. John and Debbie Morris also attended. Also, Robert and Mary McGough celebrated their fiftieth anniversary on June 1st, but they opted to go camping in the Hill Country instead of having a party. We wish them all the best in the next fifty years. Joanne Bowman had to have her surgery rescheduled last week. It will probably be this week or later. We will be praying for her, and we will also continue to pray for Megan Rogers as she undergoes some important medical tests this week. Lynn Davis and her Sunday School class have decided to put together a cookbook for the church. It will be to compile everyone's favorite recipes and also, it will have a heritage section which will contain recipes from those who are no longer with us. Anyone who has recipes they would like to contribute should give them to Lynn or leave them in the church office. Speaking of cooking, Linda Massey is so excited to be out of school for the year that she borrowed Dorothy Botts' bread machine and has been cooking up breads, rolls, pizza, etc. every day. The cinnamon rolls she brought to Bible study on Sunday were delicious. Vacation Bible School is almost here, about two and a half weeks away now, and there is still a need for some volunteers, but you better hurry because the jobs are filling up fast. The theme this year is Up, Up and Away. If you would like to donate supplies, check your newsletter or contact Angela Martin. Angela has also announced that the United Methodist Women will meet in July sometime to make love ribbons. Previously it was going to be in June On Sunday, June 10th, the Grace Awakening Bible study will resume. The study will be on the Beatitudes. For those who want to be a part of this group, contact Bob or Carla Fisher. They will give you the information on purchasing a book. The United Methodist Men's breakfast is Saturday. Also, the fellowship meal is now on the second Wednesday at 6 pl.m. Richard has also stated that he will be starting an informal worship service on Wednesday evenings for those who can't make it on Sunday mornings. We were sorry to see that two of our members were literally hobbling around the church this past Sunday. Teena Blakeney and Crystal Simons both had accidents at home which have made it very difficult for them to walk. Teena can't even get a shoe on. We will be praying for both of you. There are as lot of birthdays this month. Up through June 12th we have Elizabeth Rowan, Paul VanHorn, June Hitt, Lenora Dembeck, Kris Netwon, Rusty Newsom, Jerry Sparks, Danny Mathus and Debbie Pearce celebrating getting another year older. The anniversaries for that same time period are, Robert and Mary McGough, Jerry and Marilyn Sparks, David and Lucy Owens, Charles and Lori Wilson and Gary and Mary Ann Hendrix. Congratulations to everyone. |
