Van Zandt County Historical Commission

The Van Zandt County Historical Commission met at a special meeting on Thursday, June 7 at the Ranchero Restaurant in Canton with chairman Dr. Rollin Sininger of Canton presiding. Members attending were Laurence Greer, Cheryl Vaughn, Tommy Aduddell, Ruth Abbott, all of Canton, Mable Cook and Dorothy Wright of Van, Lynn Kitchens of Grand Saline, Elvis Allen of Fruitvale, and Sibyl Creasey of Ben Wheeler.

Nelba Walters of Canton appeared at the commission meeting to present her applications for a Texas State Historic Cemetery Designation for Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. She has worked on this project for several years gathering the history and documentation necessary. Her application was approved and subsequently sent in to the state.

The remainder of the meeting was taken up by members reviewing the guidelines for county historical commissions and the responsibilities of each committee. The review was led by vice chairman Laurence Greer.

The next commission meeting will be on Tuesday, June 19 at 1 p.m. at the commission office in the courthouse annex in Canton. Visitors are always welcome to attend the meetings.
