Monthly sales tax revenue rises for State and Local Governments

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs announced last week that the state collected $1.7 billion in sales tax revenue in May.

Combs sent cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $420 million in June local sales tax allocations, up 5.5 percent compared to June 2006.

"Growth in sales tax revenue remains healthy," Combs said. "Sales tax collections reflect the current healthy state of the Texas economy - notably the oil and gas, manufacturing and retail trade sectors."

Combs sent June sales tax allocations of $283.6 million to Texas cities, up 5 percent compared to June 2006.

So far this calendar year, city sales tax allocations are up 7 percent compared to the same time period last year.

Texas counties received sales tax payments of $25.1 million, up 4.6 percent compared to June. So far this year, sales tax allocations to counties are up 8.2 percent compared to 2006.

In addition, $14.2 million went to 122 special purpose taxing districts around the state, up 21.3 percent compared to last June.

Ten local transit systems received $96.9 million in sales tax allocations, up 5.1 percent compared to a year ago.

State sales tax collections in May and local sales tax allocations in June represent sales that occurred in April and were reported to the Comptroller in May.
