Kaylan Harris was crowned the 2007 Today's Junior (ages 10-12) Talent Winner for the state of Texas at the Today's Girl State Finals on June 6-10 in Plano.
She competed against girls from all over the state of Texas for awards and titles to reign with throughout the coming year. To win this title, she sang her version of The Pretenders' song, "I'll Stand by You."
Kaylan also competed in interviews, casual wear modeling and formal wear modeling. Each girl is required to complete at least eight hours of community service work to be eligible to compete. Kaylan completed more than fifty hours of community service with charities such as "Relay for Life," "Teddy Bears for State Troopers" and collecting old cell phones for abused families that are living in shelters.
She received a bronze pin along with a letter of congratulations from President George Bush for her service to the community. Kaylan will be competing against other girls from Texas, Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Mississippi and Florida at the National Today's Girl Finals in July. She will represent Texas and her home town at various preliminary pageants and events throughout the coming year. Kaylan is the daughter of Mike and Teresa Harris of Chandler.
Today's Girl is a scholarship based program which encourages the development of talent, academic achievement and an awareness of the need to improve our social environment through community service. To meet this quest, Today's Girl sponsors pageants wherein each girl who wins a title, must participate in community service projects in order to qualify for a State Overall title each year.
