A Murchison family watched their deceased father's home go up in smoke last Wednesday afternoon as firefighters from Murchison, Brownsboro, Athens, and Baxter volunteer fire departments fought to contain the flames.
The home, located at 4980 State Highway 31, west of Murchison, was owned by the late I.H. West who passed away last year.
Murchison VFD Chief Lloyd Smith said the fire department was paged out to an address east of Murchison, however, firefighters soon learned they were headed in the wrong direction.
"They paged us out and told us it was east of Murchison," Smith said. "We got out east and called back for the numbers again. They then confirmed it was west of Murchison."
Upon their arrival, Murchison firefighters found the fire had reached the attic of the home and called for back up from Brownsboro and Athens, as well as additional water supply from Baxter. Adding to the delay upon their arrival firefighters found the pumper truck was not in working order.
The assistance of the additional fire departments had the fire brought under control quickly, but not before destroying the home.
Mr. West's son, Jimmy West, said his family had been cleaning up the three bedroom rancher, painting, and was in the process of buying the home.
Thursday morning Smith said he met with two fire marshals from Kaufman who said a preliminary investigation showed the fire was electrical.
"It looked like it started from behind the cook stove," Smith said.
No one was in the home when the fire started.
