Lake Palestine U.M.C. The first ever movie night sponsored by the Youth was a big success. Approximately 25-30 church members turned out to see A Night at the Museum. The movie was free but the youth raised some funds through selling popcorn, pizza and soft drinks. The very next day the same youth sponsored an open house where they served hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, cookies and watermelon. Special thanks should also go to those adults who work so hard with this group, Milton and Jan Decker, Rusty and Cindy Newsom and Scott and Angela Martin. Also, for those interested in working with the Boy Scouts, Angela is looking for people to help with merit badges. She has a list of the types of expertise she needs, so if you are interested in that, contact her. Rev. Richard and Rebecca Prather returned from Arkansas on Sunday night and reported they had a very nice time getting together with their friends from the Bolivian mission field. While Richard was gone, Sunny Farley gave the sermons at the two morning services. She did an excellent job. The choir, under the direction of Carla Fisher, sang Whipering Hope. This week, Richard is at summer camp in Lakeview. It is for the fifth and sixth graders. He should be having a lot of fun. Joyce Martin has announced that she will be having a meeting of those interested in working with the GED program at the church. It will be on July 30th. It was reported last week that Bernard and Linda Massey had gone to Ecuador. Actually, they tried to go to Ecuador but couldn't work out the tickets, so instead, the word is that they are in Argentina. That should be fun too. Trudy and Fred Riddle have had a good summer taking care of their grandchildren. They have also been visiting relatives out of town. Gordon and Vera Rhodes have been able to be back in church the past couple of weeks. Vera's dad is doing much better, but she still has to drive out to West Texas every few weeks to check on him. John Riveire came through his double knee surgery just fine, but he is having some trouble dealing with the pain. We will be praying for him. Bill Martin came through his surgical procedures with flying colors. They haven't even slowed him down. Vicki Patton got her picture in the Tyler paper last week. She had the UM Army at her house putting in a cement walk in her backyard. Kaethe Griffin got to spend a little extra time with her great-grandchildren this past week when her granddaughter's house was flooded with water. Everything should be coming back to normal now. A group met after church last Sunday and had lunch at the Mexican restaurant in Chandler while another group went down to Frankston to try out the restaurant down there. Dale and Mary Ann Whisenhunt reported they had the best ever month in July with over sixty Angel Food boxes sold. They would still like to see more being placed though. Anyone interested in this endeavor should contact them at the church. Sandra Buchanan is happy to announce that she can hear again. Her hearing aids have been fixed. Diana Hicks and family held the memorial service for Argle at the church on Monday morning. The ladies of the church had a meal for the family afterward. It was a beautiful service and really reflected Argle's personality. |
