Texas College news The Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) recently released its institutional and individual grade point average (GPA) awards. According to Dr. Billy C. Hawkins, president of Texas College (TC), TC received the Institutional GPA Award and 49 student athletes received the Individual GPA Award. RRAC institutions are ranked on the cumulate GPA of all student-athletes competing for the college in RRACsanctioned sports for the 2006-07 academic year. Texas College student athletes ranked the highest of the 13- member RRAC schools with a cumulative GPA of 3.18. RRAC sanctioned sports at Texas College include baseball, men's and women's basketball, football, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's track and field, and volleyball. Dr. Billy C. Hawkins, president of Texas College, has announced that the college was awarded a three-year grant for $578,988 from the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE). The Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program (MSEIP) grant is designed to effect long-range improvement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education at predominantly minority institutions and to increase the flow of underrepresented ethnic minorities, particularly minority women, into science and technology careers. Texas College plans to interest students in STEM courses and degree programs by increasing the number of related courses offered and redesigning current courses to reflect the learning styles of minority students. The objectives are to increase STEM course requirements for non- STEM degree programs, increase students' GPAs in these courses, and increase the number of students majoring in STEM programs. For further information on STEM courses or programs, contact Dr. T.V. Meek, Interim Vice President for Institutional Advancement, 903-593-8311, ext. 2329. |
