Bears quarterback yet to be decided
By Chad Wilson Editor

For the past three years the Brownsboro Bears never had to worry who would be the team's starting quarterback for the varsity football squad. This year head coach John Settle has three quarterbacks competing for the top spot.

Competing for the varsity quarterback position are Sophomore Zach Bailey, Sophomore Brad McDonald and Junior Jeremy Monroe.

Former BHS quarterback Jordan Magee was named the starter over Cory Smith as a Sophomore in 2004. Magee and the Bears took some lumps the first season finishing with a record of 2-8.

Magee's Junior year the Bears earned a playoff berth losing a close battle to Tatum. Tatum won the Class AAA state title that season.

Finally in his Senior season Magee led the Bears to their best season in school history with a record of 10-4 and a trip to the State Quarterfinals. Magee also broke the school record for passing yards in 2006.

Coach Settle hopes the next quarterback named for the Bears will have the same success that Magee earned. If Bailey or McDonald are picked to lead the team another three year plan may be in the works.

The 2-8 season the Bears suffered during Settle's first year as head coach with Magee a sophomore quarterback will likely not be repeated.

Overall the football program at Brownsboro High is in good shape with a plethora of young talent and a good core of upperclassmen.

One downfall to the quarterback position while Magee was leading the pack was that there was never a backup whom the coaches could groom as the replacement.

Last season Magee did not miss a snap, his backup at the position was fellow senior Dustin Wilson. In 2005-06 Magee's backup was Cory Smith.

With the competition at quarterback the Bears are well stocked with players to play the position for the next three years.

While the three compete for the varsity quarterback position there is also several candidate for quarterback at both the Junior Varsity and Freshman level as well.

After the Varsity Bears name the starting quarterback the other two players will remain on the varsity roster backing up the named starter as well as playing in other positions.

Monroe and Bailey are both good defensive backs while McDonald plays linebacker. Settle stated that all three guys are good athletes and will be playing somewhere for the Bears when they start the season.

While running scripted plays during the scrimmage Saturday against Wills Point the quarterbacks rotated time at the position.

Brad McDonald completed a short swing pass to Cameron Warren for a five yard touchdown, the Varsity Bears only touchdown in the scrimmage.

Zach Bailey completed the longest play of the day with a 26 yard completion to Jerqualyn Dora.
