Free GED prep begins Sept. 10

During July and August, Lake Palestine United Methodist Church (LPUMC) distributed flyers and printed a news release in The Statesman regarding the formation of a GED Preparation class for our area. Coordinator Joyce Martin is thrilled to announce that classes will begin September 10th with at least fourteen students.

Applicants have been assessed by the Literacy Council of Tyler, volunteers have been trained and teaching materials are onsite for the program. Participants are divided almost equally between men and women and range in age for the teens through the 60s.

These learners from throughout our community will join LPUMC volunteers for classes each Monday night from 6-9 p.m.

Three learning environments will be created. Two group classes as well as oneon one instruction will be available depending on the need of the learner.

"In the best sense of the word, this is not like high school," says Mrs. Martin. "Our program will be based on life experience and adult expectations. We know life gets in the way sometimes. Right now though may be the time for our learners to achieve their GED certification and we want to help."

Application for the classes is ongoing throughout the year and available to anyone. There is no charge for the classes and instructional supplies are provided by the Lake Palestine United Methodist Church members. For more information you can reach Mrs. Martin at 903-849-6918.
