Bailey named Bears starting QB

Once the competition began at quarterback, sophomore Zach Bailey stepped up to the challenge to earn the starting spot for the Bears in their season opener against Jacksonville this Friday night.

Coach John Settle stated that there is a good chance that Brad McDonald and Jeremy Monroe will also receive some playing time at the quarterback position this season.

Bailey and the Bears looked impressive in Crandall last Thursday night as they scored on both first team offensive possessions.

Defensively the Bears were dominate, not allowing Crandall a first down until late in the scrimmage.

Overall the Bears first team won 2-0, while the second team won 1-0.

On the Bears first possession of the scrimmage Bailey completed his first five pass attempts including a 32 yard touchdown strike to Andrew Adair.

Bailey manned the quarterback position the entire first possession of plays resulting in six completions on ten attempts for 80 yards.

Brownsboro ran all 16 plays in the first series out of the shotgun formation. Cameron Warren, Will Jones and David Rudd combined for 45 yards rushing on six attempts.

On the Varsity Bears second first team possession Bailey connected with Tristian Warren for a 14 yard touchdown.

Leading the Bears into scoring position was sophomore Cameron Warren. Warren rushed for 19 yards on three carries while catching a pass from Bailey for 12 yards. Bailey completed five of 11 passes on the possession for 63 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Marching onto the field for one final first team defensive stand the Varsity Bears once again dominated the Crandall offense. Crandall was 4-1 in District 13-AAA last season.

Jose Hernandez and Jared Bray recorded a sack on the final possession. Overall the Bears forced three turnovers, including an interception by Tristian Warren.

Brownsboro's second team offense scored on a Jeremy Monroe 5-yard pass to Charlie Stringer.

The Bears will travel to Jacksonville Friday night to take on the Class 4A Indians. Game time begins at 7:30pm.
