Mt. Pisgah Cemetery designated historical
by Sibyl Creasey

Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, located on CR 4105 has been officially designated by the state as an historical cemetery, according to a report made at the Van Zandt County Historical Commission during its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 21 at the commission office located in the courthouse annex in Canton, chaired by Dr. Rollin Sininger of Canton.

Attending the meeting were Karen Asher, Cheryl Vaughn, and Tommy Aduddell of Canton; Mable Cook and Dorothy Wright of Van; Elvis Allen of Fruitvale; and Sibyl Creasey of Ben Wheeler.

Nelba Walters of Canton has been working on the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery project for several years. Her next step will be to apply for a state sanctioned historical marker which will be submitted in November. The commission is currently working with several additional cemetery designation projects that are pending and several historical marker applications that are to be submitted in November as well.

"The process of applying for state historical cemetery designations and state historical markers is stringent and time consuming," stated Dr. Sininger, "but well worth the effort since it culminates in more accurate historical information being recorded for prosperity as well as official state approved markers being placed."

Member Dorothy Wright was asked to represent the commission and make a presentation at the Republican Club meeting at the American National Bank on Monday, October 15.

The commission has also been invited to attend the state historical marker dedication of the site of the Methodist church in Canton on Saturday, October 6 at 2 p.m. and to make a brief presentation.

The next meeting of the historical commission will be on Tuesday, September 18 at 1 p.m. at the commission office. The meetings are open to the public and visitors are welcomed.
