Oh so close; Bears fall 8-6

Chad Wilson Photo Freshman Dallas Huckabee breaks free from Mount Vernon defenders on the way to the Freshman Bears first touchdown of the season.
Heading into the fourth quarter of last Thursday's game against Mount Vernon the Freshman Bears held a 6- 0 lead thanks to the legs and strength of Dallas Huckabee.

Huckabee broke the scoreless tie late in the third quarter as he broke through the middle of the Tiger defense on a 15 yard run.

Brownsboro's two-point conversion attempt was no good, leaving the Bears with a 6-0 lead.

On a drive beginning with 2:22 left in the third quarter, immediately following Huckabee's touchdown, the Tigers used 11 plays to tie the game at six.

Mount Vernon drove 60 and scored on a third and goal from the 15 yard line on a pass to the visitor's side of the field. To take the lead the Tigers converted the two-point attempt on another pass play.

Overall the Bears totaled 133 yards of offense while surrendering 176 to Mount Vernon. Brownsboro rushed for 56 yards on 22 carries and completed 9-13 passes for 77 yards.

Mount Vernon rushed for 133 yards on 24 carries and completed four passes for 43 yards.

Huckabee led the Bears in rushing gaining 50 yards on six carries. He also caught a pass for nine yards.

Kyle Faulkner connected with Huckabee on the nine yard completion on what might have been the weirdest play of the night.

On first and ten from the Tiger 25 yard line Faulkner dropped back to pass and had to scramble to avoid the heavy pressure from Tiger defenders.

Instead of running out of bounds some 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage Faulkner launched the ball across the field to a wide open Huckabee.

Faulkner's pass traveled at least 35 yards in the air before Huckabee caught the pass and gained nine yards.

The crazy completion set up Huckabee's touchdown just two plays later.

Chris Stringer led the Bears in receiving, catching four passes for 68 yards. His longest reception was for 25 yards.

Taylor Skaggs was second on the team in rushing as he rushed for 29 yards on eight carries. His longest run was 10 yards.

Defensively the Bears forced two turnovers. DeAndre Taylor had a second quarter interception and Johnny Oden recovered a fumble to end the first half of play. Stringer also had a tackle for a three yard loss against Mount Vernon.

Brownsboro is scheduled to play in Westwood tonight, Thursday, at 5:00pm and play at home again next week against Sabine. Last season Sabine did not field a freshman team.
