WWII Veteran to serve as parade Grand Marshal
Mr. Taylor was born in 1921 in Clyde, Texas, and graduated from Union Grove High School. He married Markey Sobey of Gladewater in 1943 and they have three children. Mr. Taylor joined the U.S. Navy in 1940 and served until 1946. His primary duties were performed as an anti-aircraft gunner on the USS Pennsylvania. The USS Pennsylvania was in dry dock in Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941. Following completion of repairs, the ship and its crew conducted military operations to remove the Japanese from the island of Attu, Alaska, located at the very end of the Aleutian Islands chain. Following the Alaskan assignment, he transferred to the USS Thompson with patrol and convoy responsibilities in the North Atlantic, including participation in the naval task force landing during the Normandy invasion on D-Day in June of 1944. Mr. Taylor's group also conducted operations in southern France, Italy, and Africa before being transferred back to the Pacific Theater, where the USS Thompson was poised to invade Japan when the war ended in June 1945. The ship was then modified as a minesweeper and helped to clean up the China Sea until his discharge in 1946. Mr. Taylor worked for Sun Oil Company until his retirement in 1980. He is an active member of the Pearl Harbor Survivor Association, and esAmanda timates that there are approxi- mately 4,500 Naval Pearl Harbor survivors left. He is also a member of the VFW and has served on the steering committee of the Westside VFD. Bud and Markey enjoy fishing and living on Lake Palestine. The Pow Wow Parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Satur- day, October 13, 2007. Plan to join the activities to recognize and show appreciation to Mr. Taylor and all veterans and active duty men and women who serve with great sacrifice to keep the USA free. |
