Bearettes fall in district opener

Chad Wilson Photo Freshman Hillary Shaffer goes high above the net to spike the ball during the District 14-3A opener.
Set one was outstanding but the following two sets in last Tuesday's District 14-3A opener did not go the way the varsity Bearettes had planned.

Brownsboro and Bullard fought back and forth in the first set with the Bearettes leading up to the 13th point.

From thirteen on the teams fought back and forth trading the lead. After being tied at 24 the Bearettes could not stop the Lady Panthers from scoring twice to take the set 26-24.

Bullard took complete control of the final two sets winning the second 25-9 and the third set 25-14. Brownsboro never led in either set.

Freshman Hillary Shaffer led the Bearettes in aces with four and had 2 blocks and three kills. She had an ace in every set.

Naomi Scott had two kills, an ace and a block while Amber Strickland had five assists and an ace. Amy Scarborough had one ace for the Bearettes.

Last Friday the Bearettes played in their final non-district game of the season in Gilmer.

Gilmer swept the Bearettes by the scores of 25-7, 25-19, 25-12.

Strickland had 38 assists, two blocks and an ace. Shaffer added 3 digs and four blocks. Chelsea Chimney had 3 digs and a kill while Scott had one kill and two blocks.

With the loss in Gilmer the Bearettes overall record falls to 10-11 on the season.

Brownsboro (0-1) played in Van on Tuesday night in district action and will play Canton in Brownsboro on Friday at 4:30 before hosting Chapel Hill Tuesday, October 2.
