Freshman Bears defeat Eustace

The Eustace Bulldogs made a late run but the Freshman Bears stepped up on defense to secure their first win of the 2007 football season.

Hosting the Bulldogs in Brownsboro last Thursday the Bears carried a 6-0 lead into the half before winning the contest 14-10. Sabine, Brownsboro's originally scheduled opponent, does not field a freshman team.

The Bears scored on their second possession of the game as Taylor Skaggs rushed in from 23 yards out. On the drive Skaggs rushed for 52 yards on two carries.

Just before the first half of play expired JT Cox intercepted a Bulldogs pass on the Brownsboro three yard line.

Eustace recorded a safety on the Bears with a little over six minutes to go in the third quarter to cut the Bears led to 6-2.

After a Darad Davis interception the Bears started in good field position with 4:41 to play in the game. On fourth and eleven Cox connected with DeAndre Taylor for a 35 yard touchdown pass.

The two-point conversion was made by Charfus Mayfield to give the Bears a 14-2 lead with 2:11 left in the game.

Eustace answered right back driving 70 yards for a touchdown before converting the two-point conversion cutting the Bears lead to 14-10.

Michael Lee recovered the onside kick attempt for the Bears seemingly halting Eustace's comeback attempt.

On the Bears first play they fumbled and the loose ball was recovered by Eustace with :35 left to play.

The Bulldogs were driven back for a loss of 10 yards on first down before Kyle Faulkner ended the `Dogs hopes of a rally with an interception as time expired.

Brownsboro totaled 107 of offense in the win, 63 coming on the ground and 44 in the air.

Eustace totaled 146 total offensive yard with 81 on the ground and 65 in the air.

The Bears defense forced three interceptions and Bradley Lento had a tackle for a loss.

Brownsboro (1-3) will travel to Emory Rains tonight to take on the Wildcats. Game time is scheduled for 5:00pm.
