`Return, The Parker Family' presented at ETGS meeting
by Scott Fitzgerald

East Texas Genealogical Society will hold its regular monthly meeting on Saturday, October 13th at 2:00 pm. at the Tyler Public Library in the Taylor Auditorium featuring Jack Selden. He will present a program called "Return, The Parker Family."

We will discuss his book, Return, The Parker Family, with emphasis on the role the family played during both the Republic of Texas and the State of Texas.

Jack Selden was born in Palestine and graduated from high school there. He began his undergraduate work at the University of Chicago and completed it at George Washington University where he received a bachelor's degree. He served twenty-one years in the United States Air Force. After his retirement, he returned to Palestine, where he now lives. Selden was elected to three terms as Mayor of Palestine. He continues to be active in local activities including the Anderson County Historical Commission, the annual Anderson County History Forum, cemetery preservation, and various other genealogical interests.

He has been a freelance writer for many years. Besides newspapers, he has written for Texas Highways, Texas Star, and Southwestern Art. He was a contributor to the six-volume New Handbook of Texas published by the Texas State Historical Commission. He has appeared on the History Channel as an expert on the Parker story.

Selden has been researching, writing, and speaking about the famous Parker family for more than forty years. He has accumulated a wealth of documents that relate to the family and has interviewed scores of the early family members. He says he is fortunate enough to have married a member of this illustrious family.

Approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the regular program and refreshments, the Computer Interest Group of the East Texas Genealogical Society will meet with Beverly Odom, Larry Oliver and Scott Fitzgerald who will conduct a round table discussion of any computer topics that attendees might have.
