Bearettes sweep Chapel Hill; fall to Athens
With both games in Brownsboro last week the Bearettes had home court advantage and swept the Chapel Hill Lady Bulldogs 25-20, 25- 21 and 25-16 on Tuesday. Amber Strickland started the match off good for the Bearettes as she served three points in a row to give Brownsboro a 3-0 lead. The Bearettes never looked back as they kept the lead the entire first set. Brownsboro's biggest lead of the set was nine points. In set two the Lady `Dogs were first to score but the Bearettes rallied back to take a 3-1 lead on two service points by Strickland. Following a 4-4 tie Chelsea Chimney gave the Bearettes a 10-4 lead after serving six points in a row. Chapel Hill closed to within a point, 18- 17, but the Bearettes marched away with the win outscoring the Lady `Dogs 7-4.
Chimney had four kills and an ace in the win while Hillary Shaffer had 3 blocks and 4 kills. Naomi Scott had 2 kills, Strickland 13 assists and Sabrina Bradley had two kills. On Friday the Bearettes looked as if they may upset the District 14-AAA favorite and State ranked Athens Lady Hornets. Brownsboro won the first set 25-20 before falling in the final three sets by the scores of 25-21, 25-22, 25-19. Strickland paced the girls with 15 assists while Scott and Chimney each had four kills. Shaffer had six blocks and four kills. The Bearettes played in Bullard to start the second half of District 14-3A play on Tuesday and will host Van Friday night in Brownsboro. Estimated game time is 5:30pm, following the freshman and JV games beginning at 4:00pm. On the season the Bearettes are 13-13 and 2-3 in district play. Bullard, Van and Athens are all tied for first with a 4-1 district record. Subvarsity In subvarsity action the JV lost to Chapel Hill in three sets 23-25, 25-13, 16-25. They defeated Athens on Friday in three sets 25-17, 26-28, 25-15. On Tuesday the Bearettes held a 17-4 lead in set one before the Lady `Dogs rallied to tie the game at 20 before eventually winning. Brownsboro never took a lead in the final game of the three game set but rallied to within two points, 16-18. Paige Penny had six service points in a row in game one while in the final set Alex Conway served seven points in a row. The freshmen lost to Chapel Hill by the scores of 23-25, 15-25 and defeated Athens 29-27, 19-25 and 25-21. |
