Ty Benson, a Brownsboro 7th grader, placed 9th at the 2nd Annual National Night Racing Championships on October 20th in Celeste, Texas.
He is sponsored by his family owned business, Auto Pro Transmissions on High-Way 31 between Chandler and Brownsboro. Ty is the son of Brian and Cristi Williams and grand-son of Fred and Judy Crone of Chandler.
This past summer Ty competed across the state of Texas for the chance to qualify for the National Championships. He not only qualified but placed three places higher in the National race than the group of 28 racers he regularly competed against during the summer.
Ty has always had a love for things that go fast. He started riding horses at the age of two, moved up into a 4-wheeler at age four and now spends every opportunity on his Honda 80CR dirtbike. He travels 3 of 7 days a week with either Mom or Dad behind the wheel.
His Mother states, "It all began in second grade. He told all his friends and teachers that he was going to be a professional dirtbike racer. We thought the idea would pass and hopefully he would move into something else that wasn't as expensive or dangerous. Ty loves to draw and would sit for hours at a time drawing dirtbikes and racetracks. For years he talked about nothing else but racing."
She continued "One day I ran into a young man who was selling his racebike because he was moving up into another class. At that time Ty needed some motivation to get his grades up and we thought it would be a great incentive. When school started, his grades were not what we expected so we had to put his dirt bike up for about 4 months. He was crushed. Needless to say, he eventually caught on and he put a lot more effort into his school work. This summer was our first racing season and Ty has done a great job."
Ty's little brother, Brandon Williams, will be following in his footsteps next summer.
