Down Memory Lane
A brief look back into the events that took place in 1976
by Bette Jones

Are you feeling a little nostalgic about the good old days? We, here at The Statesman have gone into our archives and decided to give you some "old" news from the past. We have taken excerpts from editions beginning with 1976, the year the paper began.

If you were a child in the BISD in first grade 1976, we may just print your letter to Santa. In later years we printed New Year's Resolutions from 3rd and 4th graders. Do you remember if Santa brought all you asked for? Do you remember the good things you resolved to do? In the community news columns, written at first by Mrs. Eva Tompkins and Miss Elsie Stuart, you might see who visited you, who was in the hospital, who had the first mess of poke salit in the spring, etc. Much good information!

We hope you enjoy this column and welcome your comments.

Statesman Begins Publication Wednesday, February 18, 1976

The Chandler and Brownsboro Statesman recorded number one with this edition. The Statesman will be a weekly edition which will be mailed free to every home in the Chandler, Brownsboro and Edom areas.

The first edition is a culmination of several weeks of work and planning, and it is hoped that the community will be pleased with the efforts put forth to bring you local hometown and county news.

Editor of The Statesman is Roger Perry. Perry is a 1973 graduate of East Texas State University, receiving a BBA with his major emphasis in accounting. Perry is married and currently resides east of Athens.

Due to a number of circumstances, The Statesman does not have an office available for our clients at the present time, but hopefully in the near future one will be available and the public will be made aware of it at that time.

Due to there not being an office at present, it is necessary that all news, classified advertisements and correspondence be mailed to: The Chandler & Brownsboro Statesman, General Delivery, either to Chandler or Brownsboro. As soon as boxes become available, the public will be made aware of more specific addresses.

"During the first few weeks, we ask the citizens to bear with us until a working solution can be formulated and disseminated to you for added convenience," Perry said.
