Chandler Elementary School chatter

Chandler Elementary Celebrated Red Ribbon Week kicking off the week with a "We are Ready to be Drug Free" Assembly featuring Korn Pop the clown. Each day of the week the students wore their red ribbons in support.
First Grade - Students are learning about Fire Safety this October month. They have discussed, written and read about Fire Safety and how it can save lives! Discuss your fire plan at home and practice doing it. Always have a "meeting place" outside for the family to meet in case of a fire. Don't forget to check your batteries in your smoke and fire alarms. Students are also learning Safety Rules for Halloween.

First Graders are truly on the right track. They are learning how important it is to become a "Good Reader and Writer." Parents, don't forget to let these "Beginner Readers " read 5-10 minutes to you each night! Students should also practice writing simple sentences using correct punctuation at the beginning and end of each sentence. Also practice simple addition and simple subtraction with sums to 10.

Congratulations, parents and students. You are off to a Great Start in First Grade!

The Second Graders have been learning about earning, saving and spending money that they and their parents make. As an enrichment activity, they walked to Citizens National Bank where they met the tellers and were shown different things about the bank. They were taught how to write a check, then they went to a teller who actually cashed the check for $.25. The teachers would like to thank CNB again for allowing us this learning experience.

Third Graders - We are now in the second six weeks of school and our third graders are as busy as bees! The students have been practicing for their program which will be on Tuesday, November 13th. It is going to be a great show and we hope to see you there! Our Scholastic Book Fair "Family Night" will also be held that same night at 5:30-6:30.

The students are learning how to do two-step word problems in math, and they are really excited about learning the concept of multiplication. The students are working really hard on their strategies to help them comprehend material while reading. (Ask them to show you what they have learned.) We hope that they continue with their hard work! We have learned about nouns -- all types, and are almost through learning our lower case cursive letters. We just finished our science unit on minerals and rocks and are beginning our second unit of study in social studies -- people in communities.

Our school year is going very well and the third grade teachers greatly appreciate all the hard work and support of the parents that volunteer their time and services for the good of our school. Thank you so much!

Our Character Word for the six weeks is `respect.' Respect means treating others with respect, using good manners, being considerate of others, and not hitting or hurting others.

We want to send a big thank you to Kappa Pi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma for donating school supplies. We truly appreciate you thinking of us.

During September we celebrated Homecoming Week. We dressed up differently each day to show our school spirit. On Wednesday we had a mini pep rally and released balloons. Thank you to Balloons with a Twist and Korn Pop for helping us with the balloons. We sold about 1200 balloons in order to raise money for the school. The balloons were found in Winona, Gilmer and Lindale. What a spectacular event! Our students went to the district wide pep rally on Friday of that week. They had a great time and showed lots of school spirit.

Our students participated in the Pow Wow parade. We had six floats plus a truck with Mrs. McCoy, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Cates. We were all dressed in our best red, white and blue or camo clothing. Thank you to the Lions Club for organizing a great parade. We had a great time!

During Fire Prevention Week, we had the Chandler Volunteer Fire Department come to our school for Pre-K through 3rd grade. We learned a great deal about fire safety. Thank you to the Volunteer Fire Department for helping our community and for visiting our school.

Students will be recognized for perfect attendance and no tardies throughout the year. Be sure to be at school on time every day. We now have a warning bell that rings at 7:55 and the tardy bell will ring at 8:00. Make sure you are in your class at 8:00.

The week of October 22-26 we celebrated Safe School Week, School Bus Safety Week, Character Counts Week, and Red Ribbon Week.

Fall Festival was October 25th and it was a great success. Contact PTO for more information.

We are participating in some great programs this year. Our reading programs are Book Buddy by Braums and the Book-It Program by Pizza Hut. We are participating in the Good Grades Program again this year, sponsored by Taco Bell. We will also be participating in the 6 Flags Program later in the year.

We are collecting Box Tops again this year. Send 10 box tops in an envelope with your child's name on it. We will draw names for prizes.

Happy Birthday! Student birthdays are acknowledged in the office. Come by the office and pick up your Birthday Ribbon on your special day.
