JV Bears down Panthers 28-12
Brownsboro freshman quarterback Ryan Owens led the Bears to the 16-point victory as he passed for 165 yards while completing a season high 23 of 32 passes. Owens passed for three touchdowns in the game, one in each of the first three quarters. He also completed a pass to seven different receivers and had a string of 10 straight completions. With 5:31 left in the first quarter the Bears tied the game at six as Owens connected with Austin Adair for a five yard touchdown pass. Jon Jon Thompson quickly gave the Bears the lead after Garrett Bragg blocked a Bullard punt attempt. Thompson rushed in from four yards out putting the Bears in front 14-6 after he converted the two point conversion. Using the height of Adam Dingler to their advantage the Bears scored with 4:04 left in the first half on a 10 yard fade pass from Owens to Dingler in the endzone. Owens converted the two point on a quarterback keeper giving the Bears a 22-6 lead.
The game's final touchdown came with 5:31 on the clock in the third quarter as Owens connected on a 15-yard pass to Thompson. With the win the Bears improved to 7-1-1 on the season and 3-0-1 in District 14-AAA play. They will conclude the season tonight at home against the Athens Hornets. Owens and Thompson have combined to give the Bears a powerful offensive punch. Thompson has rushed for 626 yards in eight games this season while gaining 75 yards on 12 carries against Bullard. Thompson has averaged 9.63 yards per carry on the season while scoring 10 rushing touchdowns. He also leads the Bears in receiving yards with 501 yards on 24 receptions. He has scored eight receiving touchdowns. While completing 66% of his passes this season Owens has passed for 1,284 yards, 20 touchdowns and three interceptions.
James Cofer, Adam Dingler and Bret Ralson all have over 10 catches and 100 yards receiving this season for the Bears. Against Bullard the Bears offense totaled 294 yards with 165 yards coming through the air and 129 yards on the ground. Bullard gained 215 yards of total offense. Owens' leading receiver against Bullard was Thomp- son as the two connected seven times for 54 yards and one score. The Bear defense held the Panthers to 62 yards in the second half of play last Thursday after allowing 153 yards in the first half. Michael House recovered a fumble for the Bears on a kickoff while Jon Jon Thompson made a one handed interception. OT Moore and Jeremy Blackerby both had tackles for a loss for Brownsboro to lead the Bear defense. Playing in their first junior varsity game Dallas Huckabee and Charfus Mayfield played well on defense for the Bears. Both were moved to the JV team as there was no freshman game last week. |
