Griffin, Bearettes set for historic season
By Chad Wilson Editor

Fred Griffin - 1983
The Brownsboro Bearettes will kick off the 2007-08 basketball season this weekend as they host Mount Pleasant in Brownsboro at noon on Saturday.

While searching for their first win of the season and also their starting five, the Bearettes will also be on a mission to help head coach Fred Griffin capture his 800th career win this season.

Entering his 31st season as a head coach Griffin's overall record stands at 783 wins and 261 losses. He has posted a career winning percentage of .750.

Griffin has been at his best as coach of the blue and gold as he has posted a winning percentage of .781 and an overall record of 637-178. He has coached the Bearettes since August 1983, a 24 year span.

Last season the Bearettes finished with just 13 wins overall after finishing the 2005-06 season with 34 wins.

This year the Bearettes will need to win 17 games to help coach Griffin earn his 800th win, a win mark that is expected to be accomplished by the start of District 14-AAA play on January 4, 2008.

Griffin earned his 700th career win during the Great East Texas Shoot Out held in Brownsboro on December 13, 2003. The Bearettes defeated Lufkin 50-49 for the historic win.

One goal still in sight for Griffin in his coaching career is that of winning the state championship. He has coached six teams to the state tournament including the 2003 and 2006 Bearettes.

Griffin is a graduate of Louisiana College and was honored for his 700th win before the January 16, 2004 game against Eustace with a special sign that still hangs in the Brownsboro High School gym today.

Born and raised in Florida Griffin's first win in Brownsboro came against Wills Point in the 1983 season opener. He also led the Bearettes to a 57-38 district opening win over Jefferson his first season as coach.

Before coming to BHS Griffin was the coach at Hicks High School in Louisiana. He was named the 2004 Brownsboro Citizen of the Year by the Chandler Brownsboro Area Chamber of Commerce.

Brownsboro will return several members from last year's team including Chelsea Chimney, Bianca Mosley, Naomi Scott and Monica Redfearn.
