Hornets edge JV Bears 21-20

Playing from behind the entire game the Junior Varsity Bears were unable to claim a share of the district title as they were defeated by Athens 21-20 last Thursday in Brownsboro.

With the heartbreaking loss the Bears finished the season with an overall record of 7-2-1 and a district record of 3-1-1. Brownsboro opened and closed the 2007 season with a loss.

Athens scored to open the game on a 12-play 68 yard drive to take an early lead. The Bears answered right back as Jon Jon Thompson crossed the goal line on a one yard run. Brownsboro's two point try was no good leaving the score 7-6.

Following a penalty on their next series the Hornets went to the air scoring from 78 yards out to increase their lead to 14-6.

With 2:55 left in the first half the Bears cut the Hornet lead to two points as they pulled out their favorite trick play. Owens passed the ball to Austin Adair who then pitched the ball to a running Thompson. Thompson scampered 68 yards for the score.

Brownsboro missed the two point try once again and the Hornets quickly increased their halftime lead to 21-12 on a 17 yard run with :19 left in the first half.

The Bears closed to within one point after scoring on a six yard run by Owens with 3:42 left to play in the third. The two point try was good as Owens connected with James Cofer.

Neither team drove inside the redzone in the fourth quarter.

Against Athens, Owens completed 12-21 passes for 134 yards and one touchdown while throwing just his fourth interception of the season. On the season he passed for 1,418 yards and 21 touchdowns, completing 65% of his passes. His quarterback rating is 113.7.

Thompson also had a nice season for the Bears as he rushed for 657 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also led the Bears in receiving with 28 catches for 611 yards and nine touchdowns. Austin Adair had 35 catches for 330 yards on the season.

Brownsboro totaled 248 yards of offense against Athens while the Hornets totaled 305 yards. Thompson had four catches for 110 yards and a touchdowns.
