Letter to the Editor found to be misleading
By Chad Wilson Editor

In the November 29 issue of The Chandler and Brownsboro Statesman a letter to the editor that was submitted and signed by Howard Taliaferro was printed with false and misleading information.

The statement by Mr. Taliaferro "The record was set straight at the last City Council meeting in Chandler as the City administrator admitted that he signed the Mayor's name and wrote the letter to the editor saying that if you want the whole truth ask him or any council member. Well it looks like that he wanted the readers to think the Mayor wrote the letter, " was false and misleading.

City Administrator, Jim Moffeit did not sign Mayor Joye Rains name to the letter; but he did help construct the letter as part of his job requirements as the City Administrator.

In the Professional Services Agreement for Position of City Administrator for the City of Chandler Section 3, Article N states "Administrator shall prepare general correspondence, reports, agreements and such for various projects as required by the Mayor or City Council."

Moffeit fulfilled his duty to the City by constructing the letter that was published in The Statesman on October 18. After constructing the letter, he passed the letter on to the mayor who made some additions and corrections before signing her name to the letter.

The process used by the City of Chandler to construct the letter is the same process that any organization uses to produce speeches or letters for publication. Other organizations that use this process include but are not limited to churches, businesses and the President of the United States.

At the November 13 City Council meeting Moffeit acknowledged that he wrote the letter, but never acknowledged signing the Mayor's name. An audio tape of the meeting on Tuesday, November 13 is available at the Chandler City Hall.

Other information that was misleading in the letter to the editor published on November 29 was as follows "And by the way when the citizens of Chandler were told that the only solid waste company that could pick up in the City of Chandler was Sanitation Solutions and any one else would be fined every day that they used any one else. You can believe me there is some one else still picking up solid waste in the city."

Outside of Sanitation Solutions, the only other trash company known to be picking up garbage in Chandler is Allied Waste. Allied is contracted through Brownsboro Independent School District, a political subdivision all its own.

Allied Waste is only picking up waste from the schools in Chandler that are under the covering of BISD.

The Chandler & Brownsboro Statesman regrets the error and would like to thank the City Mayor and City Administrator for calling the error to our attention.

It is not the policy of The Statesman to print any information, including letters to the editor, that are false and misleading. Letters found to be misleading will not be printed. A retraction will be made for letters or other media items that are printed with any misleading information.
