Chaney runs unopposed for sixth term as tax assessor-collector Milburn Chaney's campaign for Henderson County Tax Assessor-Collector is underway, and he's running unopposed. Chaney has served as tax assessor-collector for 18 years, and he's aiming for four more. Certified by the Board of Tax Professional Examiners, he's been in office since 1989. "I'm running unopposed so far," Chaney said of the upcoming election. "I had an opponent last election. The election is every four years." Put simply, a tax assessor-collector collects taxes on property in the county the collector is in. In addition, the collector is also an agent for the Texas Department of Transportation, and handles the registration and licensing of Henderson County citizens' automobiles. "I feel like I'm doing something I like to do," Chaney said. "I bring changes to some of the laws to make things better for the people in Henderson County." A press release from the Henderson County Tax Office stated Milburn is responsible for collecting special fees demanded by Henderson County and Texas on alcoholic drink permits within the County. Also, Chaney is a Voters Registrar and accepts applications for voter registration, issues voter certificates, maintains registration lists, verifies petitions for local option elections and submits reports to the Secretary of State's office. During his time as tax assessor collector, Chaney opened two extra sub-stations in the county; one in Chandler and the other in Seven-Points. This gives residents in those areas a closer place to handle government related paperwork such as registering automobiles and paying taxes. "I like helping people. I work to lower the tax rates, and I care for this county," Chaney said. |
