The week of basketball action did not begin the way the Bearettes had hoped but by weeks end the Bearettes walked off the court happy as they won the Grand Saline Tournament for the second consecutive year.

Last Tuesday the Bearettes traveled to Sabine and lost to the Lady Cardinals by the score of 50-44.

Chelsea Chimney led the Bearettes in scoring with 20 points. Monica Redfearn also scored in double figures with 15 points. Redfearn nailed three 3-pointers in the game.

Beginning play in the Grand Saline Tournament on Thursday the Bearettes faced off against Cross Roads in round one.

Brownsboro used a strong first period to keep Cross Roads behind the entire game as the Bearettes rolled to a 61-56 victory. Chimney scored a team high 25 points while Monica Redfearn (13) and Sabrina Bradley (10) both scored in double figures.

Redfearn nailed three 3- pointers for the second consecutive game. Synola Harmon also hit a three for the Bearettes.

In round two of the tournament, the semifinals, the Bearettes faced off against Westwood. In a close game the Bearettes edged the Lady Panthers 38-31 to advance to the Championship game against host Grand Saline.

Brownsboro outscored Grand Saline 28-16 in the first half of play and 26-21 in the second half of play to claim the tournament championship by the score of 54- 37.

For the Bearettes Chimney and Bradley combined to score 24 points in the title and earned a place on the All-Tournament Team.

Brittany Lee and Naomi Scott each hit a three pointer for the Bearettes in the final game.

Next on the Bearettes agenda is the Bearette Double Header on December 28-29. The varsity girls will tipoff against LaPoyner on Friday, December 28 at 6:30pm. On Saturday the Bearettes will play again at 6:30pm against Grace Community.

On the season the Bearettes improved to 13-5 with the win over Grand Saline.

Head coach Fred Griffin is now four wins away from his 800th career win.

If the Bearettes defeated Gladewater on Tuesday and win both games of the Bearette Double Header Griffin could possibly win his 800th career game at Brownsboro on January 4 as the Bearettes host Van.

The game against Van is the first game of District 14- 3A action this season. Former Bearette assistant coach Toby Mitchell is the head coach of the Van Lady Vandals.
