Letters To The Editor The letters to the editor concerning the flooding at Coy Ellis's have been quite interesting. All somebody had to do was ask someone within the water department (utilities department) was there ANY changes made to the drainage system of Chandler, Texas AFTER the flooding at the Ellis's home. To be honest and accountable to the citizens, IF there were changes made to the drainage system AFTER the flooding of the home the City of Chandler should pay fully and completely to satisfy the homeowner. Anybody that's been around the area for a while has got to have an idea that the city government might just be as above board as was Bill Clinton and his administration was when they were in politics. Chandler government has needed some changes for a long time. I and some others believe Chandler would have been a lot more accountable and run like a good business is had David Monk been able to remain in office. Has anybody within Chandler's government let their religious and personal beliefs keep any business from wanting to locate in Chandler, have any officials had discussions outside of public meetings, have any officials not disclosed or covered up any wrong actions of a city employee? I am not the messenger; I do like to read, listen and ask questions. Larry Rogers Chandler, Texas God Bless Dwayne Garner!! For his letter last week, Dwayne Garner just moved into third place on my alltime HERO list behind Audie Murphy and John Wayne. By the statements in his letter it's my feeling that he is drawing a line in the sand right here in Brownsboro, Texas the same way Travis did at the Alamo and I'm crossing that line to stand by his side. Why can't we get a man like this to run for President? In all honesty, I'd rather see him become Governor of Texas, then us secede from the Union. Either way there's no doubt in my mind Dwayne Garner is the MAN for the job. Glen Vest Brownsboro Dear Editor, I am writing in response to an article published in the November 15 issue of The Statesman. I realize that was a month ago, yet I had hoped to see some response to the "Witches, Demons and Tortures" by Charles C. Hall, Ed.D. The article began with a quote by Benjamin Franklin who is historically regarded as a wise figure of American history. Mr. Hall's education degree would seem to indicate him to be an intelligent man. Personally, I have doubts about his wisdom as compared to Ben Franklin who was a man of faith in God. This is proven by many of Franklin's writings, yet these are conveniently left out of our modern history classes at all levels of education. Hall quotes a book published in 1841. Franklin quoted from an ancient book we call the Bible (mine is 1611 KJV) which says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." Jerry Clower once said that "we are educated beyond our intelligence. " I believe that is a profound possibility. The main concern I have with Hall's article is the sentence, "All those suppositives are fueled by the notion that there is something within us that will never die." The word "notion" would indicate disbelief on the part of the writer that there is a part of man that is eternal. It is merely my point to say that the eternal soul of a person is more than a mere "notion," it is a fact of the Bible that man does have "something within us that will never die." I realize that many will not accept this as fact since they also do not accept the Bible as true. When we discount the truth of the Bible then we can discount truth about where we come from, why we are here, and where we are going. Christians believe the Bible has the answer to these questions, others simply believe that truth is relative and not absolute. Anything can then be shunned as the intellectual basis of "I don't feel like that is wrong." Then the sky is the limit as to our personal activities. We as a society have arrived to the point where God has been dismissed from our lives. Reflections of this are found daily in news reports across our nation. "If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable." (I Corinthians 15:19). I did not write this to offend anyone. I just wanted it to be known that my life is lived by "the notion that there is something within us that will never die."
