Bearettes' Griffin closes in on career win 800

If the Bearettes sweep the Bearette Doubleheader on December 28-29 against LaPoyner and Grace Community they will set the stage for an interesting night on Friday, January 4, 2008.

On Friday, January 4 the Bearettes will open District 14-3A play against the Van Vandals in Brownsboro.

Van is coached by former Bearette assistant coach Toby Mitchell. Last season Mitchell's Lady Vandals defeated the Bearettes in the District opener in his first season as head coach. It was also the first time Mitchell faced off against his former mentor Fred Griffin.

Should the Bearettes sweep the Doubleheader, Griffin will need one more win to total 800 career wins. That win could come against longtime Brownsboro rival Van.

Sweeping the Doubleheader will not be an easy task for the Bearettes as they have already lost to Grace (15-8) once this season.

In the Lindale Hoop Heaven Tournament the Bearettes lost to Grace by the score of 68-44. Grace Community defeated the Bearettes with strong performances in the first and fourth periods.

Brownsboro is 14-5 on the season including a 67-45 win over Gladewater last Tuesday night in Gladewater.

Chelsea Chimney led all players in scoring in the game at Gladewater with a season high 30 points. Monica Redfearn (12) and Sabrina Bradley (10) both scored in double figures for Brownsboro in the win.

Redfearn nailed two 3-point shots while LeCandace Bell also sank one from behind the arc. The Junior Varsity team also defeated Gladewater, stats were not available as of press time.

Coach Griffin WILL get his 800th career win this season. All signs point to him getting this win during the first part of District 14-3A play.

Griffin's career record stands at 797-266 while his record at Brownsboro is 651- 183.

After hosting Van to begin District play the Bearettes will travel to Chapel Hill on Tuesday, January 8. Following Chapel Hill the Bearettes host Canton and Bullard at home in Brownsboro.

The Bearettes will tipoff at 6:30pm on Friday against LaPoyner in the Bearette Double Header. On Saturday the Bearettes will play Grace at 6:30pm.

Subvarsity action pits the Freshman Bearettes against LaPoyner at noon on Friday and against Van at 1:15pm on Saturday. JV will play at 2:30 on Friday against Van and 3:45pm on Saturday against Grace.
