Mays sentenced to death

Randall Wayne Mays was found guilty Friday, May 9, and sentenced to death on Tuesday, May 13, for the shooting death of Henderson County Sheriff 's Deputy Tony Ogburn. The jury handed down the sentence at about 2 pm.

The shooting deaths of Tony Ogburn Sr., along with Paul Halbelt, occurred in May of 2007. A third officer, Kevin Harris, was wounded during the firefight.

Ogburn, 61, was a five-year veteran of the department while Halbelt, 63, was a 13- year veteran.

The shooting occurred May 17 at the scene of a domestic disturbance at Mays' home near Payne Springs. The call to authorities was made by a neighbor when Mays and his wife, Candace, were involved in an argument.

Mays' defense attorney, Bobby Mims, presented witnesses who claimed Mays suffers from a paranoid disorder which resulted in the shooting. Steve Green, an Athens attorney, also represented Mays.

Donna Bennett, Henderson County Distract Attorney, and Wesley Maul, Texas Attorney General Prosecutor prosecuted the case.
