Bears suffer first loss to the Rains Wildcats

Bailey has 1,081 passing yards through the end of pre-district play

The Varsity Bears traveled to Emory Friday, September 26, to take on Rains at the Wildcat Stadium. Brownsboro went into this last non-district game 4-0 and Rains 0-3. The Bears fell to the Wildcats with less than a minute left to play and the game ended with 41- 47, Rains.

Rains controlled the ball for most of the first quarter. However, the Brownsboro Bears were able to stop the Wildcats from scoring any points in the quarter.

With approximately four minutes left in the first quarter, Rains hoped to put three points on the board, but missed the field goal and Brownsboro got the ball.

On first and ten Brownsboro was given 15- yards,due to a pass interference against the Wildcats, granting them another first down. On second and five Cameron Warren received a flag for holding. After the Bears were moved back 5- yards, Bailey connected with Seth Martin and he ran it into the endzone with 3:43 left on the clock. Ryan Smith's kick was good and the Bears took an early lead 7-0.

Into the second quarter, Rains was only able to gain 7-yards on their first possession. Defensive Lineman Jared Bray put the pressure on the Wildcats offense, forcing them to punt.

On the Bears next possession, with 5:36 left to play in the second quarter, Tight End Keith Johnson scored the Bears second touchdown making the score 13-0. The kick was no good and the score remained.

Rains threw an incomplete pass bringing it to second and ten. Wildcats quarterback then threw an interception right into the hands of Jon Jon Thompson and he took it into the endzone with 5:16 on the clock. Smith's kick was good and the score 20-0, Bears.

The Wildcats came back on their next play and scored a 69-yard touchdown with 5:59 left in the second quar- ter. Again, their extra-point attempt was no good, leaving the score at 20-6.

Quarterback Ryan Owens opened up the Bears next possession. On third down the Bears fumbled and Rains recovered.

Bear Keith Johnson retaliated, with only 1:46 left in the second quarter, by scoring the Bears fourth touchdown. Smith got the extra point and the score 27-13.

Rains then scored again on their next play, but the kick was no good. The score escalated and the first half ended 27-19.

Opening up the second half was the Bears, but not for long. Rains caught an interception in the Bears endzone.

With 7:48 left in third quarter, Sir'Shea Bowman took it to the endzone and Smith's kick was good making the score 34-19, Bears.

Bailey scored the Bears fifth touchdown on third and goal with 4:07 left on the clock. Smith's kick was good raising the score 41- 19.

Wildcats answered with another touchdown, this time trying for the twopoint conversion, but the Bears defense held them and the fourth quarter started with 41-31, Bears.

With only two minutes into the fourth quarter, Rains scored a touchdown and their two-point conversion was good.

After six plays, Bailey threw to Tristain Warren, but the ball was fumbled. Rains recovered and ran it in for a 52-yard touchdown. With everyone in the stands on their feet and 6:23 left to play, the Bears and Wildcats were tied (41-41).

On their last chance, Bailey threw a pass, intended for Tristain Warren, and it was intercepted. The Wildcats ran it back for a 75- yard touchdown, concluding the close game of 41-47, Rains.

The Bears finished the game with a total of 290 yards rushing, 320 receiving and 97 on kick off returns.

Junior Quarterback Zach Bailey has, so far, completed 71 of 109 passes for 1081 yards and 414 rushing. He has thrown 11 touchdowns and rushed for 8.

For the 2008 season, Tristain Warren has a total of 31 yards rushing, 244 receiving and an outstanding 234 on kickoff returns. Bears opponents have definitely learned not to kick the ball into the hands of Tristain.

So far, Runningback Cameron Warren has a total of 490 yards rushing, 219 receiving and 43 on kickoff returns. He has a total of 10 touchdowns. Cameron is averaging 98 yards rushing per game.

Tight End Keith Johnson has racked up 408 receiving yards this year and 4 touchdowns.

When asked how Coach Settle sees the Varsity team going into district play Settle said, "I'd say that we are happy to be 4-1, but we are looking to improve each week."

This Friday is an open week for the Bears as they prepare for their first district game against Westwood, October 10. The Bears will travel to Palesitne to take on the Panthers Stadium. Kickoff will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Last year Palestine Westwood had a record of 7- 5. Currently, the Panthers are 2-3.

According to Dave Campbell's 2008 Texas Football; The Panther players to watch out for are Runningback D.J. Morrow (6-10, 190, 4.6), Defensive End Sam Dunnam (6-4, 232, 4.9), Defensive End Seth Gilkey (6-3, 223, 4.8), Offensive Lineman Bud Brown (6-1, 211, 5.0) and Wide Receiver George White (6-2, 168, 4.7). The top juniors: Defensive Lineman Michael Walker (6-2, 295, 5.2) and Wide Receiver Cameron Shead (5-10, 181, 4.8).

Directions to Panter Stadium: From Athens take left on Loop 7, exit at Hwy 19 and take a left, in Palestine take right on Loop 256, take a right on Hwy 79, follow down to Westwood School, take a right to school.
