Chandler High School reunion a huge success
It was a rare sight to see over 200 former students and teachers of Chandler High School gathered in one room. On Saturday, September 20, this is what happened at the Chandler Intermediate School building.
Former Chandler High School goers met at a schoolwide reunion Saturday morning for a highly anticipated get-together. According to a reunion committee member, the group enjoyed renewing old friendships, and during the mingle time there were memorabilia tables fills with items and pictures representing each class from 1927-1965 for former school-goers to view.
"This was the first reunion in many, many years," the committee member said. "It was also the only one for the whole high school since the school was closed that I know of."
The reunion was in planning for months, with a meeting conducted each month to work out the essentials.
"It was well worth it," the committee member said. "Everybody said it was wonderful, and they thanked us."
All of the reunion committee expressed its gratitude for Mrs. Jones at CIS for the use of the school.
One reunion attendee flew all the way from California to be at the high school reunion, and there was an air of excitement at seeing old friends again.
A catered lunch was served in the gymnasium, and the tables were decorated with reminders of past school days and Chandler High Tiger balloons.
Each class was recognized and, in addition, important events that occurred during each class's graduating year were read. Awards were also presented along with cheers and the school song.
The oldest graduate present, Fairy Horton, graduated in 1927; she was given flowers. The last classes from the school were in 1960 and 1965, as the school was closed after 1960, but reopened for one last year in 1965.
Each former student received a booklet listing every student from all classes and a paperweight with a copy of a picture of the school, drawn by Edith Billie Pollard.
The agenda for the program was presented in a 50s style menu folder and included the reunion's sponsors.
Sponsors included: Southside Bank, Citizens State Bank, Kidd-Jones Oil Co., Crestview Properties, Copeland's Chandler Drug, Cade Properties and Citizens National Bank..
Those in the reunion committee were: Jim Powell, Rosie Carnes Bussman, Alton Cade, Charles Cade, Jerry Cade, Nelda Ellis Cade, Don Copeland, Martha Reagan Copeland, Jerry Houston, Joyce Hobbs Houston, Jack Jones, Dorothy Ellis McHam, Sarah Wallace Parker, Juanita Cade Price, Mary Fitzgerald Stewart. The reunion was a big success and plans for another reunion are already being thought about.
