LETTER TO EDITOR
To the Taxpayers of BISD:
The election being held on October 11, 2008 is to raise your school taxes. The ad in the paper on September 11, 2008 stated that you would be voting in a Tax Rollback Election; however, your taxes will be a rollback to a year when they were higher. If you vote yes, it will raise your taxes, not cut them.
I called Superintendent Mr. Elton Caldwell to talk to him about this misleading information, and he said that the State of Texas allows them to use the words `Tax Rollback'. If they are allowed to use the words Tax Rollback they need to explain exactly what they mean, instead of being misleading.
They say that the teachers will be getting a raise, but the teachers who have been there 25 years or more will only get about a $500.00 a year raise, while the others will get $1,500.00. If they are going to give them a raise they should give the same amount.
I believe our taxpayers should call Mr. Caldwell at 903-852- 3701 and the school board members so they can get the facts about what we are voting on. I have also talked to several people in our community and they think this is for a tax rollback, not a tax increase, and I think the people need to know what this is really for.
