Jimmie Johnson took the win at Kansas Speedway, Sunday, September 28. This is the third race into the Chase to the Sprint Cup and Johnson is now the leader in points.
It came down, on the last lap, to Johnson and Carl Edwards. Edwards, who started 34th, was leading the race until he had some problems during a pit stop with only 47 laps to go. Edwards was obviously determined to pass Johnson at his home track, but on turn three hit the wall and it slowed him down just enough to get him .280 seconds behind Johnson.
"I planned on hitting the wall, but I didn't plan on the wall slowing me down that much," said Edwards after walking up to Johnson's car and congratulating him.
Greg Biffle caught third place after passing Jeff Gordon on the last lap. Gordon was under the weather and showed that calling into work sick was not an option. Instead he placed fourth at Kansas and added 160 points, bumping him up by two spots in the Chase.
Matt Kenseth finished fifth right in front of Kevin Harvick. Harvick started 36th and made his way up to the front early on into the race and placed sixth.
Even though there are seven races left, Johnson's chances of winning the 2008 Sprint Cup Championship are looking pretty good and he is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. He could make history if he wins this Cup, for this would be his third consecutive Championship victory.
This week 43 drivers will take it to Alabama, at the famous Talladega Superspeedway, Sunday, October 5. The race will air on ESPN at 1p.m.
Last year Jeff Gordon won both races at this track and you can bet his hunger, for the win again, has only grown. Even though it seems Johnson, Biffle and Edwards are the strongest drivers, it is still possible for drivers like Harvick, Kenseth and Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win at Talladega. Well, except for maybe some like Kyle Busch who had, yet another, bad run for the third race in a row. With that being said, this is why the anticipation of the outcome in NASCAR is so exhilarating.
